Rumpelstiltskin is fine. He's not really evil - he's just playing by goblin/fairy rules, so the exchange of children for services would be fine with him (ALSO wasn't medieval europe pretty OK with the exchange-of-children-for-material-gain? I mean that's basically marriage and apprenticeship right?). In fact it's actually weirdly legit. Most fairies just take kids without asking.

IN FACT a quick wikipedia-ing establishes that he was extremely above board. The miller's daughter knew the bargain he was offering and she accepted it, and then tried to renege on her deal. True he's exploiting an unequal power arrangement, but it's not Stilty's fault the king of this weird country is into abducting random peasants on the basis of rumour. He's not a moral capitalist, but he is at least a legalistic one. Like, still a villain, but a comparatively minor one compared to the insane tyrant apparently in charge of this damn place.

The only good poems are the ones in Icelandic sagas. Heavy metal imagery, no symbolism: just vikings telling kings to be generous, specifically, generous to them, before going off to vomit in more ungenerous vikings' faces.

a) That is an amazing story

b) I choose to believe your grandad marched into the dark with his sleeves rolled up, muttering 'no dang cat's going to make a liar of me!'

Kafka on the Shore is terrible. But Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is pretty great imo. Feel like Murakami suffers when he tries to be real. Kafka is insufferable. I like his worlds to be as distant as the tone of his writing and Hard Boiled is a complete fantasy.

Could you possibly elaborate on the panther?

If you're looking for great schlock, I'd recommend Lair of the White Worm on Netflix. Peter Capaldi and Hugh Grant fight a snake vampire queen/high priestess of ancient Roman snake god.

I like to believe that in the face of apocalypse, humanity took what joy it could in goofy names for their doomed children.

I would argue passionately for a 1st season pass with tv series, because so many great shows only truly find their feet post- or midway-season 1 (Wire, Community, Parks & Rec etc.). But am behind throwing a book away if first 3 pages are not goddamn pristine.

I have not read or seen The Help, yet use it constantly as an example for how Hollywood whitewashes non-white history.
