I'll quote the letter from a friend's Call of Cthulhu RPG game that caused our buddy to go insane in game, and become momentarily unhinged out of game: Dear doctor, They've been here the whole time.

I heard about this new factual historian that just hit the streets. He goes by the name of Harry Turtledove. I think we should campaign to have his books used as reference material in our secondary schools.

The Wild Hunt : The Troubling Rise of David Barton

I'm personally of the mind that the majority share of taxes from a product or service should be put back into that service. New York recently closed a number of state parks due to lack of funding. I, personally, would not mind paying an entrance fee into some of these parks PROVIDED that the funding goes directly back into the maintenance and upkeep of the state park system instead of a budget plan to build Joe Bruno another stadium, or something.

No, the state (THIS state) keeps raising taxes because they have no idea how to manage money.

I live in New York State. We have an enormous mark-up on cigarettes. Our cheapest pack of cigs costs $8.00, after taxes. They've also passed a law that prevents the importation of cigarettes to a personal residence through the mail. While I do not smoke, I sort of feel that this is absolutely ridiculous. Because the money isn't going anywhere worthwhile. It gets lost in the bureaucratic shuffle and gets allocated to other services that end up wasting the money. So what they do is they up the prices again to try to make up for it. Eventually they're going to be so expensive people are unable to smoke. And then what? Great law-makers in Albany have already attempted an "I-tax", a tax on cable television and internet connections, in addition to the aforementioned salt ban (the assemblyman who sponsored this had admitted that he "knew absolutely nothing about the importance of salt in baking" but wanted to make it illegal for food-service to cook with salt), and the soda tax. So while on one hand I do not smoke, I take a stand against the exponential increase of tobacco products. Because eventually it will transfer to some other product or luxury that you or I use. I hear a lot of people saying that "smokers deserve it", or they listen to the insurance companies in saying that its the smokers fault their premiums are going up.

The Wild Hunt : Quick Note: Halloween vs. The Recession

According to government accounts, the recession has been "Over" since July of last year. This is purely based on the definition of a recession as a reduction in a country's overall GDP. When they came out with this on the news, I burst out laughing in my store.

The Wild Hunt : Update: The Fall of a Witch-Hunter

I'm actually glad this broke NOW as opposed to when his Crusade was going on in full tilt. His blinded followers (as I understand it? I haven't read any tweets) are already claiming he was hexed. Imagine what their outcry would have been had this broken at the time? Regardless of the validity, I wonder how many of his more moderate followers would've believed it was some kind of conspiracy to overthrow him. I'm sure a fair number already do.

One doesn't need to be inside to see how painfully obvious these Neocons are making it. I find it interesting that those inside the party are so willing to ignore the same old rhetoric just because it comes with a "We'll lower taxes" stamp.

The Tea Party is backing candidates that are pushing an economic platform, yes. But they're backing candidates that also have a social agenda, and they're tweaking their platforms in order to highlight the economic issues while hoping these candidates remember their plans for social change. They simply realized that this year, no one gives a flying crap about anything but their pocket books, so trying to force feed the same social rhetoric will lose them votes.

The Wild Hunt : How We Deal With Death

I think that's a very reasonable hypothesis, Chelsea, and not cynical at all. Americans, in particular, are very fearful of death. We throw our sick and dying into hospice care where we do not have to deal with them, and the funerary business just rakes in the profits from this hypercommercialization of death. We seek to preserve the specter of life, when in reality all we are doing is simply disrespecting those that have passed us. Americans also fear the notion of just ceasing to exist - we exist in a society where we have to accumulate wealth, where it's so ingrained in us to make profit, rake in material possessions, and fight in this hegemonic struggle for supremacy over our peers, that the notion of it all just going to pot is terrifying. And, perhaps, it's the fact that once someone dies, a lot of people just go on their daily lives without much impact from it, after the grieving process is finished. They don't want to fade like that. The Sociological and Anthropological studies of death are truly fascinating, particularly in our culture. I really suggest reading some studies based on that, and how the funeral/mortuary industry has influenced this notion of permanence after death.
