The Toast : An Open Thread, and Sea Room

Since we are all crying anyway, what book or poem always makes you cry? Susanna Tomalin's "Verses from My Room" always does it for me, especially the last verse, and it seems apt now, here at the end of all things: When you coming looking I'll be far away. Will you be puzzled? What, I wonder, say In your bewilderment? Will you know why I went and didn't wait to say good-bye?

Oh Toasties, where will we go, who wander this wasteland in search of our better selves? (sorry George Miller, I'm stealing your lines). You are all wonderful and amazing, and it is so heartening to know that a place as kind and funny as the Toast has existed.

I mean, Rocky knows he doesn't stand a chance of winning, he just wants to last the whole 15 rounds with Apollo, which no one had ever done before (he won all his bouts by KO). So it is a great story about not giving up even when you know you are beaten, but that doesn't make for a great work comparison.

My boss once compared us to Rocky. He said "we have to take a lot of hits, but we will win in the end." I pointed out that Rocky lost, much to my boss' irritation. Which might have explained my not-so-great performance review. Metaphors can be dangerous things. It is better not to approach one in the wild unless you are well trained.

I guess I thought the "this guy is my age, and super good-looking, and has a great personality" description, followed by the "why would he want to date my mom" vibe sounded a little jealous. I could be wrong, though, it is so hard to tell with the write-ins.
