Really glad you enjoyed this - I know a lot of people struggle with Fanny but I think you've got her right when you say that she is morally consistent. That is her great quality, to be the unmovable moral centre of a space inhabited by not always moral characters.

I really agree about Coupland being able to write really witty and memorable lines. In fact, there are lots of snatches of brilliance in Generation A but I found a lot that was less than brilliant too.

I would completely recommend people buy the book! I've just re-read it for my book club and enjoyed it just as much second time round. Definitely one that can be read multiple times. How it holds up to changing medical knowledge around autism (and similar conditions) will be interesting though.

Glad you enjoyed this. I also found some of the conclusions a little unsatisfying and craved more detail, but overall there are some interesting thoughts. I think the quote you picked out and the whole section about praising/engaging with children was a real highlight.

Incidentally, Socrates had it bang on the money, surely? Our consciousness and ability to reflect on our own existence is one of the things that most defines us as a species?

Anyway, thanks for the review - interesting read. My own is here: The Examined Life by Stephen Grosz, if curious. :)

I've just finished reviewing this, and I would completely agree with your opening comments - I find the whole idea of comparing this to the Potter books objectionable, and really can't see how comparing them in anyway has merit in a review. However, I didn't enjoy the book as much as you and actually found the writing incredibly dull. If Rowling was attempting to update the village novel, I really felt she needed more complexity not just an updating of tone. Enjoyed the review, thanks.

This sounds like a really fun read! I'd not heard of it before now, but I will definitely be looking it out! :) Thanks for turning my on to it, I'll have to see if I enjoy it a little more than you did for the most part.

When you list all the components this sounds like a great read, and I was certainly drawn in from others recommendations. Sadly though, I think it's a case of the whole not being equal to the sum of its parts. Nice review though :)

I think I'd agree that the novel got stronger as it went along. Overall, I was still a little underwhelmed, but I was pleased with the ending in particular.

Oh, I've got a library copy that has been on my shelves for months. Everytime I go to pick it up, something else leaps out at me. Isn't it always the way?

This is a book I've been wanting to read for about a year, and I've never quite got around to it. Having read your review, I think I might well have to bump it up my tr list and make it a summer read!
