KOMO - Seattle, WA : 236 years ago: \'When in the Course of human events ...\' | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather

Thank you KOMO for printing this entire document! Folks, please take a moment to read through the list of Oppressions against King George and ask yourself if we are once again becoming subject to a government that wants to rule over us. Our forefathers fought and died for our right to live our lives in freedom. Never forget that a government that is big enough to give you everything you need is big enough to take away everything you have! (Before you jump all over me - I am talking about BOTH political parties and their incessant desire for more and more control over every aspect of our lives, our businesses, our finances and our families!)

Actually, Harold LeMay made his money in the garbage business in Pierce County. That's what gave him the funds to purchase all of his cars. (I blast KOMO often enough about their editing - it's only fair that make note of it when they are correct.)

Oakie, Please see the comment from Woodswalker below, as well as my response to it. I freely admit to being human, and therefore prone to error, but I am fairly careful on my grammar and did mean to write the sentence with the exclamation point outside of the quotation marks. I will plead guilty to missing the comma prior to beginning the quote.

Thank you! You replied before I could, but that's exactly why I phrased the sentence as I did. The comment from the teacher was what was contained within the quotation marks. The exclamation point reflected my shock at her remark.

No - I was talking with a fifth grade teacher several years ago and mentioned something about writing skills. She said that they don't teach grammar anymore "because it's not on the WASL"!

KOMO - Seattle, WA : West Coast spike in gas prices tied to refineries | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports

"The company planned to restart last week, but that has been pushed back because of an undisclosed problem." Hmmm - wonder if the undisclosed problem is an illegal directive from the Dept of Energy just like the one used to issue the moritorium on deep water drilling in the Gulf Coast. A Federal judge ordered that to be rescinded over a year ago but nothing has happened yet. It almost seems like the Feds want gas prices to stay high! Maybe a reporter could look into the situation and get some information - would that be too much to ask?

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Son of Pierce County sheriff\'s spokesman charged with child rape | Local & Regional | Seattle News,

I am not disagreeing with your contention that a 14 yr old is simply not old enough/mature enough to understand all of the ramifications of her decisions and is therefore unable to "consent" to sex. What I find unbeleivable though is that in the next line you go on to say that she she does have the maturity to consent to a major surgical procedure without any input from her family!.And to further compound the situation., if there is a medical or psycological complication from the abortion, since she is a minor, her parents are then left with all of the financial responsibility for a procedure they didn't even know happened! I too have personal experence with post tramautic abortion issues and I will vigorously debate the idea that a 14-18 has the emotional stability to agree to an abortion! (Actually in many case, the abortion is a way to hide sexual abuse and the fact that the parents are not informed means that the abuse continues.) You and I are probably closer in opinions than it seems - I think we can both agree that society and the media are over-sexualizing our kids at way too young of an age!

The irony is that, according to our legal system, a 14 year old isn't old enough to consent to sex but if that same 14 year DOES get pregnant, she is legally allowed to have an abortion without her parents' knowledge or consent. So which is it? Is she old enough to have the "right to privacy" or isn't she?

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Elma parents say predator tried to abduct their child | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sp

This is one of the strangest and poorly written stories to run on KOMO and that is saying a lot! A young girl "briefly" disappears and then her dad says he next sees her with "unknown man" (grammar people - it's not that hard!) and that is "heartbreaking" to him. Excuse me? If I see my three year old child walking away from me with someone I don't know, I would go after them. I certainly wouldn't stand there and be heartbroken! But then, someone else, named T'Anna, rushes in and saves the child and saves the day but KOMO doesn't bother to explain who she is or what her connection is to the missing child. They just say that she took Taylor to "safe place". (What does the KOMO staff have against articles? Most readers are rather fond of them!) Please folks - either report news, with facts...or just leave it alone!

KOMO - Seattle, WA : At long last, gas prices leveling off in Wash. state | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Spo

Thank you for citing actual facts but don't expect to change too many minds here in Liberal la-la land! A federal judge found that the Obama Administration's moritorium on oil exploration in the Gulf Coast was illegal but they have thus far refused to comply with the order to lift the ban....and gas prices continue to surge. The Keystone XL pipeline project was also killed by Obama, which would have allowed oil to flow from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Now, it continues to be transported by the more costly route of railroad tankers.....oh, and didn't Obama buddy Warren Buffett purchase a 34 Billion dollar share in BNSF railroad a few years back? And doesn't Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, one of the most vocal opponents to the pipeline, have around $6 million dollars worth of Buffett's stock, which continues to rise as long as the oil is transported via rail? But, somehow, this is all George Bush's fault, right? ; )

He may or may not be licensed in the US. Although Princess Cruises is "based in Los Angeles" their ships are registered in Bermuda. As I said earlier, while the Coast Guard might be able to board a ship if they knew something illegal was happening at THAT MOMENT, when stories come out later, the cruise lines are experts at issuing vague statements about a terrible misunderstanding...followed by promises that they'll "look into the matter thoroughly" but somehow, nothing much ever changes.

People need to understand that cruise lines have been a law unto themselves for many years now. They may be "based" in the US but they flag their ships out of foreign countries so as to avoid liability laws. There are so many crimes that happen onboard the major cruise lines, from rapes to robberies to disappearances, along with absolute substandard medical care, and they never seem to be held accountable, because of the patchwork of maritime laws and treaties. So, while the actions of the Captain are inexcusable, don't look for any serious charges to be brought against anyone. The cruise lines know full well that, short of running a ship aground as the Captain of the Costa Condordia did, they'll get a bit of bad publicity and then it will all blow over. There is no moral leadership at the head of these companies - they do not care about their passengers in any way, shape or form and I'm sure that attitude is conveyed to the Captain as well. Sad but true folks! I wouldn't step foot on a cruise ship if they paid for my whole trip - I wouldn't risk my health or safety!

The quality of writing on the KOMO website is a constant source of frustration or amusement, depending on the story. One downside to a 24 hour news cycle is that stuff gets slapped up on the web before an editor has a chance to evaluate it.
