Hello! I think NetFlix definitely counts as a hobby(I hope so, anyway. . .) Nice to "meet" both of you!

Totally agree with you on the insta-love--it really killed my enjoyment of the book. I try to be a little forgiving on insta-love, as much as possible, but this one was just waaaay over the top for me.

I love the UK cover. I first read the book from the library and I spent quite awhile tracking down a UK cover I could buy in the US for my my bookshelf at home.

I use to be a big paperback fanatic. I still like paperbacks and when given the choice I'll probably buy the paperback(there's a few books where the hardcover & paperback are released at the same time, and I'll go for the paperback just for the convenience & cost factor. Plus they travel easier). However, I'm coming more around to the hardcovers. They are more durable and for my favorite books I know I'll want to have forever, hardbacks seem like a better choice.

11 years ago @ The Paper Sea - Do you set monthly TBRs? · 0 replies · +1 points

I've tried to set monthly TBRs so many times & failed every time. Sometimes I've been strict and limited it to the 10 books I actually thought I WOULD read that month. I've also done where I make a list of thirty books and can read any book from those thirty. Since I don't read thirty books in a month, it still gave me some flexibility while helping me get through some books on my shelves. That semi-worked, but in the end. . . I can't plan TBRs. As soon as I commit to reading a book a certain month, even if I was excited for it, my excitement vanishes. I have enough trouble just getting through my library books for the same reason--I'm SO EXCITED when I don't have them, and then once I pick them up I'm just "Yeah, I'll get to it eventually". My TBRs end up being the same way!

11 years ago @ The Paper Sea - Do you boycott? · 0 replies · +2 points

I tend to separate creator and content, so I don't boycott MUCH, but it happens. Like you, I won't pick up a Full Fathom Five book. I know some people are against book packaging companies as a rule, but I'm not. I think how an idea originated(as long as it isn't plagiarism) is less important than what an author does with that idea. Frey's packaging company, however, just makes me feel ill to my stomach. I actually had a copy of I Am Number Four that I had to give away after I found out it was a Full Fathom Five book. By that point, I had already bought the book & gave money to the company, so I was going to read it anyway and then just refuse to read more FFF books, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I think affiliate links are just hard to utilize because they're not the way people normally buy things from Amazon(that's the only one I have experience with, so the only one I can comment on). I do buy from links sometimes but never in reviews--only if someone makes a blog post about Amazon deals or shares it on twitter. In a year I've made $5 from being an Amazon affiliate. . . and $4 was because someone bought a $100 french book after clicking one of my links(which I've always found random. . . don't know how they got there from anything I posted!).

11 years ago @ The Paper Sea - On Getting Your Person... · 1 reply · +1 points

I think about this ALL THE TIME. I tend to also speak more "formally"--whenever I hear complaints about how some people may talk in TV shows or books or what have you and people say "People don't really talk like that", I feel like I need to raise my hand and say something to the effect of "I do! Really. And it's natural. I'm not putting on a persona. This is just how I talk". I see some bloggers who have such a great personality on their blogs and I just feel in awe of how they're able to do that. I can change my writing "voice" to a degree because my degree is in professional/technical writing and I've been trained in how to write to specific audiences, but to the extent I can get my personality across in my blog? I'm not sure I always succeed. But I write how I write when I'm not thinking of an audience, and I do hope that helps with the personality thing.

I think attend BEA is going to be on a lot of people's TTT--I know it is on mine! Meeting more of my favorite authors is on my list too. I'm still super jealous/excited for you that you've gotten to meet Patrick Ness! I've gotten to meet Kasie West & Marissa Meyer, so those are definitely exciting, but I definitely have so many others I want to meet!

And own library is a must, of course. If I could design my dream home, that's one aspect I would REQUIRE it have.

I love your take on this topic, and you have some fantastic picks!
I loved This Song Will Save Your Life so much. It's one of those books I think really RESONATES with a lot of readers.
I love The Book Thief--and I think it feels different than most WWII stories I've read, honestly. More Than This & A Monster Calls are both wonderful, but A Monster Calls especially really *gets* to me. And I'm happy to see Never Let Me Go on your list, because I have a copy of that one I plan to read in the next few months--a friend recommended it to me a year or two ago, so clearly I need to get on that!
