I still get mildly irritated when I think about that one episode of The West Wing where Bartlett calls a high-school English teacher for some reason and, in the course of the conversation, hassles her about teaching Beowulf in translation instead of "the original middle English." This might be a good place to share that I was at dim sum this weekend with a 3-year-old, and got to witness her experiencing her first potsticker.

I was thinking about possible mental health issues, as well. My husband went through a long period of unemployment (alternating with temporary, unsatisfying, low-paying employment) after getting his PhD, which isn't unusual in his field but was still not at all fun.

One thing that helped was that he is a good dude, who used his time to take care of stuff around the house and be a good partner. He also started seeing a therapist, because he knew that I couldn't be the dumping ground for his ongoing frustration and disappointment. I don't know if that's possible for LW#1's boyfriend, of course. But it might help to know that, even without getting that perfect new job, he can do something about his state of mind.

Yeah, we're moving from the Bay Area. It's hard to imagine traffic and housing prices being worse than what we've come to know here.

I learned what a 14er is just this weekend!
As for housing prices, we live in Berkeley, where the current median home price is 1.3 million. Anything will be an improvement.
