I'm going to be in Boston! Currently working on where, but it'll be an evening thing on the 26th of August probably. I'm also being interviewed for Mr Bear's Violet Hour Saloon on Boston Free Radio on the 25th. If you haven't listened to her, I can totally recommend the podcasts of the live show. Lots of cool writers paired with indie music choices.

I have questions about the texture of this - was it all wispy and delicious? Or kind of harder and sugary-crunchy?

um coming here to brag about my book going on presale (On the Edges of Vision - the one that Nicole kindly mentioned the other day) but mostly also to say BAD WORK IS AWFUL and I just had to quit a job that was driving me up the wall with stress. I have a new job with nicer colleagues now and hope you get through this!

The Toast : Books That Literally All White Men Own: The Definitive List

my dad has a preference for buying me obscure comedic books by mostly upper-class english women writers of the early-mid twentieth century although he has been known to champion comedic / melancholic books by french writers of the early twentieth century. he is also the reason I read Three Men in a Boat and a sprinkling of PJ Wodehouse as a teenager. Let it not be said that I am at all ungrateful though. Novels/poetry/short stories are always welcome.

for the UK: At least one Terry Pratchett novel (can't decide which) a memoir by a former SAS soldier guy At least one of those impossibly cheap classics (like £2 each) of 1. A Tale of Two Cities 2. oliver twist maybe? Definitely Dickens

The Toast : Notes from Edinburgh

This is so vividly alive and wonderful. As much as Edinburgh, however much I might love it, is rather austere (and yes, almost everywhere in it is in a chasm, or at the top of a windblown hill)

I would hesitate to recommend this film to anyone with children or also without children but thinking about having children or stressed out by children or by grief or anything really. I felt not at all in a good place after watching. But it is an insta-classic, so.

The Toast : A Woman Who Travels Back In Time And Doesn't Have Sex With Anyone

Also important - the likelihood of sex being inadvertently had with a direct line ancestor. This is a definite concern for me in my genetically rather limited small northern european country of origin, where most of my family back as many generations as we have record of have come from. Also the past is horrible, full of racism and ignorance, and death stalks the land via simple infections or cholera or hypothermia (main concern if you are thinking of travelling back in time to Scotland in your negligee or somesuch)

I just remembered I have to read a gothic novel for this feminist book club I belong to. Hmmm. Going to look up Gaudy Night. I wasn't a huge fan of The Little Stranger. Felt rather too well put together for my taste.

You're Next was really well done. I dunno if I can try TCM2, the first is so silly, and not in a good way. Killer Clowns??? The Others is great and so is The Orphanage Some on my list: The Innkeepers (slow is good imo) Stoker Don't Look Now Ringu The Cabinet of Dr Caligari I'm a bit too scared to watch Eyes Without a Face but I might do that one day.
