Simply out source the jobs to a private company thereby reducing expenditures and increasing the amount of education each child receives.

Big Government : Federal Judge Orders Union to Stop Violent Tactics

How is it that these individuals took guards hostage and they have not been arrested and placed in jail? This group of people make up less than 12% of the working population but somehow they can simply engage in criminal acts without retribution or accountability? I would like to see what would happen if the employees of Google, Apple, The NY Times or the LA times held guards hostage, ram-sacked buildings and products and tore down gates and fences. How long would it take for the SWAT team to be called in and for those employees to be arrested? My guess not more than 30 minutes. If this doesn't show to the rest of the American people that Unions need to be outlawed I simply don't know what it will take?

Big Government : Go Bankrupt, California, Please

The only bankruptcy is going to be the citizens of this state. You can take it to the union's bank, that these politicians will find every imaginable way to raise taxes, or their favorite word "fees" to continue their unabated spending to support the teacher and government unions. When citizens of this state re-elected Jerry Brown, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer and others then this is what the majority of the citizens of this state wants. My question is what are they going to do once they put most working citizens into bankruptcy? Who is going to pay for all of these expenses. The federal government - no way. The corporations - no way. The unions? As we sit with our homes under water, taxes rising at the federal and state level, spending going unabated to support those who want the government to spend more money "on them" it is going to take a peaceful revolution to throw these people out of office and to reclaim our state. 2012 will not be here soon enough.

Yes, we were so consistently misinformed that we kicked many Democrats out of office. I hope the nation continues down this "misinformed" path so that we can vote the rest of them out of office in 2012. Merry Christmas Mr. Soros. Yes, I'm so misinformed that I still use Merry Christmas rather than Happy Holidays. Sigh....

Big Hollywood : I've Seen the Future of Home Video: It Streams and It's Beautiful

I agree streaming is convenient - when it works without the restarts and buffering (on a 50Mbps business connection) but Netflix with 16m customers already consumes 20% of the US Internet capacity in the evening. You can bet less than half of Netflix's customers are streaming every evening. What is going to happen when these numbers increase? Also, as can be seen with the Level 3 and Comcast fight who is going to pay for all of this? Do you think Comcast is going to allow all this data transfer on their network and not bepaid for it. It will force them into tiered plans and the price of Netflix is not just going to be $7.99 per month, the additional cost is going to be raised Internet fees. Look at the Verizon LTE costs. $10 per GB if you go above your 5GB limit on the low end contract. That means your "free" Netflix stream might cost you $10 to stream that HD movie. Also, believe me the studios aren't going to let Netflix off the hook either. When you build market share the cost of films go up. Do you think Netflix is going to be able to license a movie for $7,500 when HBO pays $75,000 for the same film. No, their cost is going to be more inline with what they just paid for new content. $75-100,000 per film. Margins are going to reduce. And then what happens if the piering guys like Level 3 get shut off by folks like Comcast or as they have recently done at our home (AT&T DSL) they begin to bandwidth limit our connection. AT&T won't admit it but I know they have because our service has been great for five years but recently we have been playing lots of Netflix HD and downloading other larger content files (legally) and suddenly our connectivity goes to squat with multiple rebuffers. Let's also talk about perceived value of movies. The studios have done a great job in keeping the price of DVDs relatively constant since 1997; where else have you seen anything in the consumer electronics industry keep their pricing stable for this long? The battle with Redbox was that it gave a perceived value of $1 for a movie. Think that studios liked that? No, half of them sued Redbox and they all settled for enormous up front fees and a delayed 28 day window. So do you really think they like a perceived value of "free?" I don't think so. Watch fees rise and consequently watch subscription rates rise. The $1 per month per subscriber just announced by Netflix was clearly to cover streaming costs as stated in their announcement. This is the first of price increases and believe me not the last. So Netflix is riding high right now and it is a great service, but I'm still shorting it because as their customer base increases, the bandwidth required to transmit these films increase and as the studios and ISP providers smell money their margins are going to drop like a rock. The Netflix team are a smart group of folks as witnessed by their strong growth and understanding that they can't ship DVDs forever, but in digital they are now going to face a reality that others have a greater control on their costs (studios) and distribution (piering agents/ISPs) and believe me they can't control either of these without a lot of money. Would someone please do the math to see what would happen if everyone in America starts getting all of their TV and movie content from the Web? I have and the Internet would collapse without an incredibly expensive infrastructure upgrade to handle this increase in traffic and who is going to pay for that? Most of the posts today focus on the convenience (true) but few are looking at the costs, business relationships and ultimately what it will cost the consumer to have this "movies everywhere" reality. Fire away....

Big Government : Obamacare Waivers Prove Policy is a Jobs Killer, Unions Benefit Most

Very interesting that all of the unions that fought for Obamacare also fought to have themselves exempted from it. I guess what is good for the goose isn't good for the gander. Watch John Stossel's show on Fox called the Battle for the Future. It is about makers and takers. Those that make money and those that take money from them. It is a statement on where we stand today and especially the view that those who don't contribute to society are taking from those who do and that the very systems created to help the poor end up keeping them poor.

$200 million a day. So we are going to spend close to $1 billion dollars on this trip. I assume that the elections didn't bring a focus on our need to cut spending. What is the ROI on this investment. Oh I forgot the government doesn't have to have a return on an investment as they don't have to watch the bottom line. Both parties need to understand that this out of control spending better stop or they had better really like Chinese food.

Yes but your argument is a red herring. The individuals recording it are not asking for compensation therefore no one is being deprived of compensation. Otherwise your argument would have to be applied across every single orchestra who has ever recorded Beethoven's Fifth of which there are hundreds of recordings. So who pays the other 99 when someone decides to license from say DG? Do you consider it unfair that the other 99 didn't receive compensation during the one DG use?

Sorry Joe but I believe you are in the wrong on this issue. If a group of individuals elect to gather, record music and give it away what right do you have to complain. It is their time, instruments and effort - something you do not control. To think this is going to kill music is much like the MPAA and Hollywood saying that the DVD was going to kill their business. Absolute nonsense unless somehow adding over $20 billion in additional revenue per year kills their business. Have you thought of the possibility that this "free" music used in films might attract a new generation of classical music lovers who might just go out and buy a CD for which the musician is then paid? Remove your blinders and look beyond yourself and your own wallet. P.S. Your embedded image is dishonest as in this case no one is stealing anything...

Let's put the blame where it belongs - Democrats. They have controlled this state for years, have spent money when we didn't have it, have continued to raise taxes to all times high, and continue to dump more money into the Teacher's union where CA is placed 47th in the nation in education. Want to correct CA problems get rid of Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein and her ilk and elect a Republican governor and state representatives. I know having lived here for 30 years this will not happen - so folks this state is going to go insolvent. Government employees with your outrageous pension plans - you better think of where to move because your gravy train is just about over. The rest of us are getting out if real estate ever recovers or perhaps we should just do what our elected officials do - default on our obligations.
