Carbs are da debil. At least when it comes to insulin regulation. If you ever get a chance to read any of Dr. Michael Eades stuff he's brilliant.

BMI is a joke. It's an inaccurate measurement. Athletes who have lots of muscle are technically overweight and even obese sometimes according to BMI standards. In fact, one of the reasons we have such a "shocking" obesity EPIDEMIC (the sky is falling, the sky is falling!) is because the definition of "obese" was changed. Instead of using weight the standard became BMI. Studies prove again and again that weight loss has EVERYTHING to do with hormonal response. Your body's most involved hormone? INSULIN! Want to lose weight? You've got to control your insulin. The more sugar you eat, the more insulin your body produces. What's sad is that most people don't realize that just about everything we eat in the modern diet is treated EXACTLY like pure sugar by the body...which in turn pushes the insulin levels (in your blood) up and up and up. Which ends up in fat storage. You can run on the treadmill for hours on end. You can spend hours in the gym. But if you continue eating and drinking SUGAR CALORIES (processed/refined carbs) your progress will be slow and excruciating (if you have any real progress). It's been clinically proven that a diet high in fat/protein PWNS a diet low in fat/high in carbs. Thing is, it's a tradeoff. We need calories to function. So if we eat a low fat diet we will automatically replace those calories with high carbs (think grains, starches, etc). Even by eating what we "think" is natural food, we're KILLING ourselves. GRAINS are not good folks. Exercise is. Animal fat is. Protein is. They will lower your blood pressure AND insulin at the same time. And believe it or not, when you eat a high-fat/high protein diet your cholesterol levels will regulate. Why? INSULIN!!! Insulin is one of the key hormones involved in the production of cholesterol as well. If you have lower levels of insulin in your blood, by default you'll also have lower cholesterol levels. You might be thinking this sounds counter to conventional nutritional wisdom....and you'd be right...except for one thing: The whole low-fat, low cholesterol diet only came into the "norm" about 50 years ago. And the US government pushed it into the food pyramid AGAINST the recommendations of top scientists at the time. The very first low-fat/high "good" carb diet recommendations were written by a vegetarian intern (obviously with an agenda), NOT by nutritional scientists. I challenge ANY and everyone on this post who is interested in SOLID nutritional information that isn't driven by commodity agriculture (grains/oats) or vegetarian (anti-meat) agendas, to dig deeper. Look past the money. Look past the lobbying. Honestly, look past what the government recommends, because if the government's plan was so "right" why are there more and more cases of diabetes, heart disease, strokes, etc? One word: Carbs. Ok, I've written another novel. :)

Sorry to butt in here too...but it's not the amount of calories you eat but the type that matters! There have been studies showing people eating an excess of 5000 protein/fat calories per day that don't gain weight. Weight loss/gain is more about what your body does with SUGAR which comes from carbohydrates! It's when you add in the carbs that your metabolism gets all out of wack. Your body produces more insulin which in turn tells your body to store the excess sugar as fat. It's kind of weird to think about it this way (because our society is anti-fat) but you don't gain weight because you eat more...you eat more because you gain weight. Why? Because our bodies need FUEL to function. When your body STORES fat in your fat cells in stead of burning them for fuel, you get hungrier because there is no fuel...well, there's plenty of fuel, it's just trapped in your fat cells because of the vicious cycle. To many carbs = more insulin = more fat storage. Bottom line, you can diet or cut calories and see some change, but int the long run if you don't stay away from processed and nasty carbs, your body will eventually get the best of you. Studies ar showing that eating a diet high in protein and fat (animal fat/fish oil/nuts/seeds/etc) is healthier than eating grains, oats, rice (starchy grains). There's only one animal that eats grains "naturally" and that is birds. Carbs are for the birds! Man, I just wrote a novel.

I've been "CrossFit-ing" for the last few months and I love it. Funny thing is I haven't lost any weight. I've changed my focus from weight loss to health/fitness gain. It's easy to lose weight. You just have to do something... It's not easy to gain fitness. We're also doing a "primal" eating challenge. Basically we're eating like we would if we lived in a hunter/gatherer society. Meat, veggies, fruits, seeds, berries, nuts. Period. No junk. No bread. No sodas. No processed stuff from a box. Can you really call anything that comes from a box food? Anyways, it's a pursuit of health and fitness. Many recent studies are showing that the whole low-fat craze may actually be the cause of heart disease, strokes, weight gain, inflammation, etc. It's the CARBS! Well, the bad processed ones - which would be any grain/carb that isn't in its natural state. Goodbye pasta. Goodbye bread. Goodbye chips. Goodbye...you get the point. Funny thing is the whole "low-fat" craze is relatively new. Only about 40 years old. It's bad science. Sorry, I'm a rambling now. But anyways, I'm getting stronger and having fun doing it! I'm in for the next 31 days (and beyond)! Go Tam!
