I'm waiting on Dark Parties, too. I have a feeling 2011 is going to be quite a year for YA dystopians.

Also, this is my first time hopping by, so hello!

I actually tend to enjoy books with triangles, but they're a tricky proposition for a writer. Readers tend to pick sides fairly early on and if their hero of choice isn't the heroine, they're bound to lose interest in the series or book. At least, I know that's happened to me. If the series is long enough (see the Sookie Stackhouse books), then you know your guy is going to come into favor eventually. Whether he makes it to the end is another issue entirely.
Anyway, I'm just hopping by from WoW. I found your blog and followed the link to your essay. I'm glad I did!

I've never read any Lyndsay Sands. Would you recommend her? I tend to be veeery picky about the Paranormal Romance I read.

I'm a total baby blogger and I've been looking around for something like this. I'm so glad I visited your blog again after the Hop and found it.

Despite my inability to get into the Hunger Games, I've discovered that I really like certain dystopians. I loved Susan Beth Pfeffer's life as we knew it and the dead and the gone. But I had the same problem with Katniss. She was kind of scarily accepting of the idea of having to kill people.

I didn't really like Frankie Landau-Banks either, though I do like the Ruby Oliver books. I thought she kind of sucked. I'm glad to hear there are other people out there that don't adore her. I thought I just didn't get it.
I also never connected to the Hunger Games books, but that might be because I'm a wimp.

I read the dead and the gone (or, rather, listened to it on tape) before I listened to Life as We Knew It, so my experience of this series was backwards. I loved both books and while I had my issues with Alex, I thought Pfeffer did a great job with him. I think Alex's willingness to accept responsibility/blame for everything was actually one of his greatest flaws--as Father Mulrooney ultimately points out to him.
I agree about all the horribleness--of both books. The scariest part was that, except for the moon being closer to the earth, none of what happened was fantastical. Each new catastrophe has a totally logical consequence.
I don't know if I can read the last book in the series. I have to know if it has a (semi) happy ending or not.

Heh. It was totally the cover that put me off this book. I'm glad it's better than that. Plus, I love love triangles.

I read the Sabriel books when I was in high school. Actually, I listened to them on tape. I loved them. I hear he's really good friends with Isabelle Carmody, whose dystopian novels (the Obernewtyn Chronicles) are awesome. I have a total Aussie/Anglophile thing going on. Have you read the Demon's Lexicon series by Sarah Rees Brennan. You absolutely, definitely, completely should.
