Centurion, I follow politics pretty closely, and I read the section on foreign policy in Ron Paul's book "The Revolution." International relations is kind of my wheelhouse. As briefly as I can put it, and I am not dismissing Ron Paul or putting words in his mouth, just stating my general point of view. it is naive to believe that the world is not a dangerous place, and one's country will be left alone if you "play nice" with others. A lot of countries aren't nice. Russia, China, Venezuela, North Korea, Iran, and numerous Middle Eastern countries, for example. Paul believes that we should pursue a non-interventionist foreign policy, which I respect "on principle." Unfortunately, international relations doesn't really care much about your principles. It forces you to adapt or die. Certainly, a lot of that is mitigated if one's country has nuclear weapons and weak neighbors. The U.S. does not have to be as interventionist as it is currently. But intervening to prevent a rogue, irrational state like Iran from getting nuclear weapons is one good reason to intervene. I'm not saying occupy countries around the world and nation-build them to be like the U.S. But we need to be smart and sensible, know when a regime is evil and should be stopped from pursuing malicious plans, and defend ourselves as morally as we are able. Peace through strength, shrewd and rational foreign policy, and general restraint are keys to a more successful and cost-effective foreign policy. Complete withdrawal into "fortress America," running a quaint commercial republic, is not a smart option in a world with nuclear weapons and terrorist organizations trying to procure them and use them against infidels.

That last line is crucial - the separation of means and ends. Communists argue that it is just to use immoral means to pursue supposedly moral ends. We need to counter-argue that their ends aren't even moral. One quick example is by asking if it is "fair" for one person to benefit from another person's unwilling labor. This relationship is by nature a form of enslavement. The only kind of enslavement there is in a free market system is to reality itself. You work or you go without. Under communism, a person is expendable for "society," which makes demands on everyone to conform or else, and in reality, to work or else. Otherwise, everyone could free-ride and the economy would simply tank and there would be supply shortages and rationing and other forms of economic disruption. If a left-winger can't figure such basic economic truths out, they're not worth arguing with. You wait for them to oppress your rights, and then you get even.

If one resorts to history to prove to a leftist that communism was a scourge on mankind that was a necessary result of socialist doctrine being put in practice, he will deny that history is relevant, or will claim that communism was never actually implemented on a statewide scale. The best way to describe this mindset is utopian. “Utopia” is a word from Greek meaning “no place.” It was first used in modern parlance in Sir Thomas More’s work “Utopia” to describe through the words of a world traveler a classless society. And communism is truly no place. The broader point is that it is impossible for the right to use counterfactuals to disprove that communism works, because communism, the way the left idealizes it, doesn’t exist, and never existed. They see all the flaws of the world, they see capitalism, they see war, they see greed, and they see crime, and as long as those exist in any way, we don’t have communism. We have a capitalist society, one that must be razed to the ground so that a brave new world can be molded from the ashes. Thus whatever the world is, as long as it is imperfect, it’s not communism.
