I like ties. They make people think I have an interview somewhere else that day.

I use a physical calculator sometimes. It's faster than waiting on iWorks' Numbers to open, entering the data, making a little formula... When I need answers, I need them fast, man. At home, I have my old business calculator from 1987, the one that I used to pass Finance 325 as WSU. It has the original battery. The thing is a freaking miracle.

I thought only people made of stone came from South Dakota. Is that accurate?

5 years ago, I ended up with a cabinet full of cables that I finally cleared out last month. Did I really need 43 D-Plugs on hand? Not once did I ever open up the packages of serial cables. I have yet to crack open the giant binder with all of the technical details of our ancient NEC D-Term phone system. I also have a quart-sized yogurt container filled with keys to nowhere - at least I think so. And, I was issued a previously used laptop that had lots of someone else's personal data on it. That last point is why I always (1) do a clean install when I get a user's computer back so I can reissue a perfectly clean laptop to a new user or (2) pull the drive and destroy it before I take the workstation to an e-waste site.

1. Switchfoot - Vice Verses
2. ISTP "Cool onlookers—quiet, reserved, observing and analyzing life with detached curiosity and unexpected flashes of original humor. Usually interested in cause and effect, how and why mechanical things work, and in organizing facts using logical principles." Yeah, that's me.
3. Frank Barone of Everybody Loves Raymond and Frank Costanza from Seinfeld. Pissed off, grumpy old guys crack me up.

I have a hard time getting up in a 30' boom lift to change a lightbulb, so that skyscraper video is pretty frightening, but I think the radio tower climb video makes me more nauseous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A_h2AjJaMw&fe...

I'm the Director of Operations at EastLake Church in SoCal. I describe my role as a variety of jobs that other people don't want, and that's the perfect job for me.

* Business cards can be used as a jaunty noisemaker in the spokes of your bicycle. For even more fun, use a unicycle.
* Wisdom suggests that all you need to do is pick against my Seattle Seahawks every week.
* Hidden talent: My judgmental nature is over 95% accurate!
* Productivity should start immediately, so that everyone wonders how they ever lived without you, then taper it off slowly, so you're still thought of as an impact guy that's hit a rough spot.

I just slogged through a few reads for work on building community with small groups, so it's time to get back to some personal reads. One that's been on my wish list for a while is Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's "On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society." I went to one of his seminars called "The Bullet Proof Mind" and he's a pretty intense dude. All-time favorite book? I've got fond memories of Joseph Heller's Catch-22. That was the book that grabbed my attention enough in high school to make me think that reading a novel was pretty cool.

I haven't worked for them for the last 5 years and maybe it's 16 years of employment bias talking, but I'm a fan of Pizza Hut at the top of the pizza chain food chain. Thin crust with pepperoni, bacon pieces, jalapenos, and fresh tomatoes is delicious. I've got to say though, after Dominos came out and said that they sucked for years and were changing things up, their pizza got significantly better. But truly, if you can get the teenage cook to actually follow the corporate directions on how to make the product right, they're all pretty tasty.

The #1 FAQ at my house is courtesy of my 16 YO son: What are we doing tomorrow? Actually, he used to ask that daily when we homeschooled. Now that he's in public school, the question has been modified to What are you guys doing tomorrow? Every day. OCD runs in my family.

Before I had a desk, I would put my laptop on a barstool at home. One day, I had to get up quickly, caught my foot on the power cord and the barstool tipped over taking the laptop with it. On impact, it made a Bzzzt! sound and a puff of smoke came out. Fortunately, the company took care of it. Just like they replaced a monitor that I was dumb enough to wash with a wet rag, dripping water into the back of it while it was on. Again, a Bzzzt! sound and a puff of smoke. They also replaced my company car when I totalled it on a deer. I'm quite responsible.
