I loved the part about the parsnips. Reminds me of the time, not too many years ago, when my mother asked me to run to the store to pick up some forgotten parsnips the day of erev Rosh HaShanah. And I returned with turnips. Which, as it turns out, are not the same thing at all.

I really love this. I wish that I could do this and one day I may very well do so. For now, we are about to embark on a radical lifestyle change that is equal to yours: placing strict limits on screen time. It is going to be HORRENDOUS for all sort of reasons. BTW, I really loved your statement, "Can we all agree that Polly Pockets are manufactured in Hades?". Reminds me how much I love the clackety-clack they make when sucked up by the vacuum.

When I hear how much this candidate or that candidate has spent on 3 days of ads before a particular caucus, primary, etc., I think to myself, "hey, that could help a lot of people." Why can't the same people who are happy to donate their money to ads take the same money and support a homeless shelter or an afterschool program or whatever? As for you, take a deep breath...

When our kids go to a friend's birthday party, do they feel left out that the focus is on their friend? That their friend is the recipient of dozens of perfectly wrapped presents while the best that they can hope for is a goodie bag? Yes, quite possibly. And that is OK. The center of attention needs to be shared in order for kids to grow up into adults who are not self-absorbed, narcissistic, and self-inflated. It is for this reason that while I empathize with my kids during the weeks leading up to Christmas, I do not even attempt to make up for it with an inflated version of Chanukah. Yes, it does feel unfair that all their friends are getting new game systems, puppies, etc while they are receiving fleece pullovers, a hamper (for real!), a flashlight (Spiderman), and post-it-notes, among other practical gifts. But, as I am fond of telling my kids, life really isn't fair. And that is OK. It just seems that to celebrate some form of Christmas just 'cause "everyone's doing it" rather defeats the point of Chanukah -- a holiday dedicated to resisting assimilation.

I knew that DBG was well-acquainted with the Tanakh, but I was not aware that regular text study had at one time been a regular practice. Regardless of whether or not the Prime Minister sees the text as Divinely written or Divinely inspired, having a familiarity and ability to navigate our most holy books is a good thing. Thanks for teaching me something new today.
