This article is dead on. Palin revived the McCain campaign. She revived the Republican Party. When McCain suspended his campaign and the financial crisis hit, that's when the polls turned. Bottom line, McCain should have opposed the bailouts and sent Palin out to articulate the reasons why. That would have been a real game changer.

I don't see repealing the 14th Amendment as a realistic answer. I see immigration reform as the answer (not the liberal's version of immigration reform). We secure the borders first. Then we decide what to do with those who are still here (we can send them to the end of the line after they pay a fine, deport and arrest criminals, compassionately deport indigents incapable of paying the fine, cut off government services until someone correctly qualifies for them, etc. Part of this process could include a provision that takes into consideration my two points above. I don't see anywhere where it would be unconstitutional to have in law a statute that states those born of parents here illegally and who are subject to the authority of another country do not qualify for automatic citizenship. Sarah Palin's position is that we secure the borders first and then resolve the issue of existing illegal immigrants with a formal policy. They would have to register with the government (which I am inferring means so we could monitor compliance with the policy). I'm sure Sarah Palin will elaborate further on the issue.

This one probably requires at least a paralegal degree and access to every law book ever written on the subject, but I'll give a stab at it, subject to correction by anyone who can cite specifics in law that refute what I say. By the time we even get through the whole fight and get 3/4 of the states and 2/3 of the Senate to even think about repealing the 14th amendment, years will have gone by, our borders will be secured and their will be an immigration policy in force. I see two points in existing law that would allow us to not confer citizenship on children of illegal aliens: 1) All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. - emphasis added. This is from the 14th Amendment. 2) “All persons born in the United States and not subject to any foreign power, excluding Indians not taxed, are declared to be citizens of the United States.” - This from Sec. 1992 of U.S. Revised Statutes.
