When the iPhone 4 was released they did announce an updated 3GS with only 8G storage and a new price. I thought it significant in the earnings call that then emphasized thereafter that Apple was clear that they had two new products. My assumption is that they will have to make a iPhone 4 world phone and it will be a new model (like the Verizon 4, but with a sim tray and the ability to use T-Mobiles bands + any other weird bands (isn't Korea different?)) and would only have 8GB if there was an iPhone 5.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Intel: Optical Thunderbolt cables due next year, still at "only" 10 Gbps per channel

work with me on this. I've got a MacBook Air with an external monitor. Monitors are only at the end of the chain, right? So if I want to add or remove a thunderbolt raid, or this new printer, I lose the monitor. I see that use case as a disincentive for consumers to stop using their USB hubs and thus a disincentive for manufacturers to invest in the Thunderbolt implementation. What I'm hoping is that someone will say that inexpensive hubs are possible or that machines will have multiple thunderbolt ports.

Can someone talk to me about daisy-chaining in lieu of the hub approach? So I've got something so cool I can use it instead of hdmi, pci, e-sata, and USB. But I'm scared that if I disconnect anything in the chain I'm gonna lose the rest of the chain. Now I have not unplugged my printer for over two years. I only unplug storage a few times a year--less now that I have time machine. This means I want more stuff on a hub (which happens to be USB) and only hi-performance gear that I am never going to unplug on the daisy chain (which happens to be thunderbolt). If I can't plug it into a hub without thinking what order it is in the chain, I'm just gonna go usb. If I'm normal, then manufacturers will continue to make consumer gadgets that plug into a hub. This all assumes that there is only going to be one thunderbolt port on my machine, that my airport is gonna have usb and not thunderbolt and that thunderbolt doesn't do hubs as cheaply as usb (and my understanding is thunderbolt is exactly about overcoming the side effects that come with the degradation that is part and parcel of usb's ability to use hubs.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : First Thunderbolt products already available from LaCie and Promise

Could Apple add thunderbolt to iProds so that they can talk USB and thunderbolt? (Like the do with the MacBook audio out that is also the audio in? Or my old MacMini DVI out that was also wired for S-video.) If no one but Apple will have computers with Thunderbolt for a year, then we are stuck with an intractable chicken-and-egg obstacle in the way of any transition. I don't see Apple putting two connectors on an iPhone! Compatible products will be make or break. The genius is that it already does something: drive Apple monitors. Edit: What I'm really asking I guess if 30-pin connector will work with this?

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : AT&T says thank you to iPhone users with 1000 bonus minutes

Here's a use for it: for the past 18 month I've been on the 1400 family plan and then switching back to 700 to eat up rollover for a month (or two in some cases). Sure, I'd rather have $20 than give it away, but the big reason is that it is frustrating to have the rollovers accumulating. We were just getting back up to 1400 after using up the excess but hearing this I just switched back to 700 today hoping that the unlimited mobile to any mobile will make it work for us and the 1000 minutes will useful to make sure we don't go over during the test. I'm in Nevada (good coverage) which may contribute to my not getting a message from AT&T, but just sending out the text got me the answer withing 2 minutes.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Apple to sell smaller $200 iPhone off contract? Carrier lock-in killer?

As one who buys into the idea that not fragmenting the app/developer experience is good I have a question about display size too. What would happen if you had retina-class display with the old pixel count? You'd have the same aspect ratio and apps that work on a 3G would work on the display just how small would the UI elements be though--have to have sanded-down fingers? Cost is another problem of course, I'm not discounting that. Depending on the answers I get it leaves me with the OS the iPod Nano now uses. No apps, just iTunes music and an address book. Hmmm.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Apple's iPhone gyroscope shows industry which way is up

I am inordinately excited about NFC technology that I hope will be in the 2011 iPhone. That is one case where I expect the usefulness of technology in my iPhone will be dependent on the technology taking off with other US devices. (So more retailers and service providers will find it worth their effort to implement it.) I hope that with this component, the fact that NFC is used in Europe and east Asia will mean there will be enough suppliers that the swell in implementation will be a positive user experience without too many delays.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : iTunes to merge with Safari? Be a web-only app?

I buy that the genius of iOS ecosystem is the integration and this would be a big step to killing it. The worst thing about my iPhone is my iTunes experience so I would love to see a better solution (mea culpa: my media is on an external drive so the sluggishness is at least partially my fault--BUT the browser makes this worse, not better). I'm intrigued by the idea of breaking up iTunes into distinct services (like Outlook is iCal and Mail combined, iTunes is an kitchen sink app). Loading pdfs, ebooks, and documents through iTunes drives me nuts. SD card rumors for the iPad and this cloud iTunes music store get me excited that the experience may improve.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : New York orders thousands of iPads for schools

I agree we need to be sensitive, but is this bad for the budget? Do you know what school districts spend on text books! Kids don't care about books and they get destroyed and replaced constantly. If (and this is a big if) kids are excited about the iPad's other uses so that they get a full year's worth from them, there could be real savings. This may not be an extravagance relative to dead trees. I acknowledge that the cost question doesn't end there as the argument for ebooks applied equally to say, an android tablet (though not a kindle, in my mind as I'd hate to type a paper on it! I could only speculate that that the resource selection might not be as great and the ease of use may be a tougher sell. I think Apple has a administration system that may give it an administrability edge. But now my question: how do institutions manage apps and syncing. Ideally each student would have an iTunes account--maybe. But is there a way to by a license for Pages or so text book for 15 accounts. How about 200? Can anyone link me to an explanation of multi-user management? If every student can install their own flatulence app or IM app, it is a step back. But if they can't have their own email accounts, the iPad is just an ebook reader.
