Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Cool Christian Litmus Test Questions

I'm on a whole different level of Christian cool, albeit not a higher level. I mean I use words like "albeit" so by default I can't be on a higher level of cool. That's why I'm not ashamed to own geek. for this reason I measure out Christian coolness is a whole different way. The "grab a beer" might work well for my "Christian humor" test but not cool factor. I just don't like beer. Even when I was drinking I never liked it. I'd be with friends and we'd all have beer so I'd take a drink, hate it, put it down, forget what I was drinking, take another drink ... By the end of the night my friends would have quite the collection of empty bottles and I'd be halfway through my first. Not that I'd judge people for liking beer. Plenty of people like things I refuse to touch. I hear rotten meat is considered a delicacy in some country on the other side of the world. My test for Christian cool factor is really more of a test of snark compatibility. "So have you read today's SCL post?" If they say yes and they liked it a new friendship built on sarcasm is forged. If they say no then I get to act like I'm Christian cool for knowing about something they don't. If they say Yes and they didn't like it I yell "you are anonymous to me" and throw smoke capsules at the floor to mask my escape. (FYI I do not have smoke capsules but I do have those poppers you throw at the ground and an overactive imagination).

It is such a good video and the skit guys do a great job illustrating the point. Much better than I could ever do. PS, I really like "Irresistable" as a them. I recently installed it with some mods for Candy Steele http://steeletheday.com

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Telling someone they shouldn’t tell you about their fast.

I teach about fasting and how we shouldn't be wearing it in front of everyone, but I feel that Jesus is speaking to a different kind of thing than just sharing that you are fasting. Sometimes you have to tell people. A friend invites you to lunch and you are fasting so you shoot them down and they keep pressing because they think you are being a jerk so you go but don't eat anything and then they keep pressing thinking you're mad at them ... Yeah you really need to be honest with them. If it is totally ok to tell people then what was Jesus talking about? Oh I don't know, maybe the context reveals it. He specifically pointed out this practice of fasting where people would wear special, uncomfortable clothes and put ashes on themselves and groan about the fasting. All of this was to let everyone know about their holiness. Unfortunately we tend to grab a single verse and assume we know everything we need to know about that and make total fools of ourselves ... moral of the story, context.
