http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/ : the finished product (and what to do with your old christmas cards)

Sometimes I hang them on the fridge. I only get like maybe 2 cards a year.(3 cards would be a big year)... So not a whole lot to do with that. Then, the rest of the year, they are tucked away with junk mail I refuse to recycle or stuffed in a drawer. The real issue for me is I am kind of jealous of people that do cards. That they are so organized they can get that together every year.

I am wondering, does it work for you because it's conducted entirely online and you never have to pick up a phone? Heh heh. couldn't resist. This is very interesting to me. Your outsourcing discussion over the summer inspired me to finally get some help around my house. I hired a Peruvian PhD student to clean my house 2-3x a month. I also hired a "handyman" (that is really a English major that couldn't afford tuition this semester) to do any kind or number of odd jobs around my house and also my gardening and lawn care. It's been mostly GREAT. I don't even mind the money, or the fact that I pretty much have to write checks to get things taken care of around here. But I resonate with what you said about "committing to a certain number of time". I find myself thinking all the time that I haven't had the handyman out in about 2 weeks, and he won't want to work with me because I don't have work for him. I made it clear to not depend on me to pay his rent, etc. But I still feel anxious about this sometimes. If things don't work out, I think the Task Rabbit might be a great alternative for me. And thanks for willing to talk about asking for help. At least with you, you have 4 kids. When you are a single woman (who manages a couple of roommates and a home) it seems a little more lazy and selfish to some. But it's been so refreshing to me. You helped give me the confidence to assert myself in this area. And that's one reason I am hooked on this blog.

http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/ : how we came to have a potentially crazy person living in our backyard who more than likely wrecked m

I would love to rent that back house, as I think I've told you. The problem with that is that I work often 55-60 hours a week. I often also work six days a week. All to afford this pricey Orange County life, as you mentioned. And I'm no millionaire. Or even hundred thousandaire. So,I don't know fair it would be to you to get any housework done in a time frame that you would want. I've even tried doing the pretend schedule gymnastics in my head, and it's still tough. I just hired my OWN housekeeper to keep my house functioning and sanitary in my absence. Anyway, I am really sorry this happened. No one deserves to be taken advantage of like this. You guys are solid people that maybe give too much benefit of the doubt sometimes because you care for her welfare so much. I know it makes for good blogging (Im always coming back for more!) but sorry you had to live through this this week. Please don't hesitate to have the police take her out if needed. Keep us posted, please!

I also echo this. I have been thinking about the issue of "I don't have six more dollars to buy a replacement pair of jeans from the Goodwill". This is not okay with me. I really want to send you some gift-cards and a way to get some basic needs met. You are not just worthy of other people's hand-me-downs. You deserve something fresh and new, all your own. It can be incredibly hard to feel like a worthy human being when you feel like you can't even provide for your own basic care. I know, I've been there too. LT, I hope you will reach out to Kirsten, and make a bridge so that so many of us here on her blog can help you. We do love you. Keep reaching out. Stay connected. You didn't do anything to deserve your circumstances. It DOES get better.

http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/ : what’s the protocol for declining playdates?

I feel like a fish out of water commenting as a person that is not a parent. So I hope you'll excuse me if this is awkward but I felt like I needed to contribute. First of all---families that appear to be normal and upstanding? Tell me about that. Trust me, I know all. about. that. The risk is real, and Im glad you are willing to even acknowledge the possibility. But I want you to know your ideas and feelings are completely reasonable. You love your child, and your eyes are open. I don't disagree with any of the comments here. There are many ways you can navigate this. I think being really enthusiastic about meeting the chid's family would be a good start. Or all the other ideas given here: a playdate in a public place, or inviting his mother over for lunch. I think it also sends the message to that you're not saying, "The kids are friends, I don't care who you are" More than that, at four years old, I think the parent SHOULD probably be there, at least until you get to know the family. The kids might interact well at school where things are fairly structured. What if things don't go so well on this child's "Turf?" Anyway, Im rambling. I am confident you will make the right decision. And yay for Kembe for being "Big man on campus."

http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/ : the bedroom as metaphor for the neglected inner sanctuary

Wow. I totally relate to this. When you listed everything you ladies had in common, with the exception of the "relative perfectionist" (I think Im blessed to have not gotten that trait) I said, "check, check, check, check". I guess I really am a blogger at the core. I do wonder too why the clothes are put away and off the floor maybe a few single days a year. I HATE LAUNDRY. Id rather clean a toilet then do laundry. Really. I also wrestle with the idea that a messy room is a reflection of the how one is "doing internally". If that was 100% true, then the fact that I always have clothes on the floor means I am never well.

I don't have kids either (yet) and every kid I've ever known has done this. So, cheer up? Your kids are normal? Now, what I would like to know is why all toddlers in the presence of adults, all toddlers will start acting out as if they are starved for attention--throwing toys, crayons, deciding to carry around a glass from the counter--the second the adults try to engage in a grown up conversation. As if to say ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ME. OR, WHY ARE YOU NOT LOOKING AT ME?! I feel they all do this too. What is up with that?!
