Despite its UI failures, NEX does pose a serious image-quality challenge to Micro 4/3. So it's time for Panasonic to get off their asses and introduce a sensor with better high-ISO performance--currently only found in the GH1. Maybe they could adapt some of the new tech they're trumpeting with the LX5 chip?

I expect what is going on is that the LX5 sensor is only using 3,840 x 2,160 pixels in HD video mode (1920 x 1080 times two) for quicker downsampling. That means an image diagonal about 97% of the standard 4:3 still mode--so the "equivalent" (not actual) focal length spec becomes different.

I think you mean "aperture range"?
Because the movie mode is lower resolution (1080 x 1920 = 2 Mpx) it can tolerate more diffraction blur.
But for 10Mpx still capture, even f/8 is questionable--it gives an Airy disk diameter of ~10 microns (versus pixels 2 microns wide).
