They can go to court. They can testify. It's not always about winning the trial. This is a win for Ruby."

Aphasia Corner Blog : Skype: Free Video Calling

Hi Marcia, Adler Aphasia Center uses Skype; I have actually sat in one session where the group at the Adler Center had a 1 hour video call with a group at the SCALE center. I believe this is something they do on a (at least) weekly bases.

Aphasia Corner Blog : Using Skype: Basics

Kim, you can start the program in couple of different ways: it will typically be available from the Start menu, under Programs. When Skype is running it will place its icon in the System Tray (the array with different icons in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen); you can just double-click on the Skype icon in the system tray to bring up Skype. If you can't find it in your Program Files, you can try searching (there should be a Search option under the Start menu; there is also a Search button in Windows Explorer). Skype needs to be installed on any computer you'd like to use it from. There are some rumors that Skype is working on a web-based version of their software, but I am not aware that anything is available yet.

The newest version of Skype supports video calls with up to nine participants. Although, it seems to be free only for the first four weeks. This feature is currently not available on a Mac (only PC), but it should be available on Macs soon.

Aphasia Corner Blog : An Interview with Carl McIntyre

Carol, here is some information from the producers: As you may know, Aphasia is currently enjoying artistic recognition on the film festival circuit. Aphasia was given the El Capitan award from the Yosemite Film Fest and also won the audience favorite award as Best Short Film of the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival, both in September 2010. In July 2010 the film was screened as an Official Selection of the Prince Edward Island International Film Festival in Canada in July 2010 and as an Official Selection of both the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival in October 2010. Aphasia will screen at the Radar Hamburg International Film Festival in Germany and at the Oscar® affiliated Foyle Film Festival in Northern Ireland in November 2010. The film also has upcoming dates for screenings on the east coast and in the south throughout the fall and spring of 2011. This is a cost effective way to raise awareness of aphasia among large populations that, prior to our movie, have never heard of the disorder. Many of the film festivals prohibit distribution, so currently the DVD is not for sale. So, you can follow their website www.aphasiathemovie.com or their Facebook page, where they will announce DVD availability. If there is a larger group of people with aphasia where you live, you may want to reach out to them and see if a special event/screening can be organized.

Aphasia Corner Blog : The Public Awareness of Aphasia Around the World

A few aphasia centers in the US I've had a chance to visit have been very active in educating local community. Scale Baltimore Ambassadors are working on this (they also had a post on Aphasia Corner Blog on "Ten Things You Should Know About People With Aphasia http://aphasiacorner.com/blog/living-with-aphasia... Adler Aphasia Center members are very active in educating health care, police, firefighters, etc. on aphasia. Aphasia Center of California organizes aphasia awareness events every June (aphasia awareness month), etc. I am sure other centers have similar activities -- it would be interesting to hear directly from them on their experiences (what works, what doesn't work). There are couple of other approaches that may be interesting; The Aphasia movie about Carl McIntyre is a great example; they recently won the Audience Award at the Big Bear festival in California (http://aphasiacorner.com/blog/living-with-aphasia-2/aphasia-the-movie-519). It would also be great to see a mainstream TV show/movie in which one of the characters has aphasia. Things like this could go long way in terms of raising awareness. (by the way, I think there were some TV shows like this not too long ago; I haven't seen them personally but I've heard about it). If there is anybody in Southern California/Hollywood or somebody with connections to the movie industry, reading this, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on viability of such approach. I've heard that couple of weeks ago CBS News had weather report where person with aphasia was a newscaster. I heard it was fantastic but I have not been able to find it online. Google has a so-called Google-doodle program (http://www.google.com/doodle4google/history.html); they frequently change the logo on their home page to celebrate specific event or help raise awareness about a specific cause. It would be great if they had a logo about aphasia (perhaps next June). Would people with aphasia be interested in creating logos which we could submit to Google (no guarantees they would use it, but it may be worthwhile a try)? Any other ideas?

Chris, thank you for sharing this information. On the second graph I've noticed that some of the countries have significantly higher rates, for example, in Greece a lot of people hear about aphasia through media, and in Norway and Argentina through family and friends. Do you (or researchers from these countries that contributed the analysis) have an idea on where those differences are coming from? (e.g. are there some TV shows in Greece that made aphasia awareness higher, or special programs in Norway/Argentina for families)

Aphasia Corner Blog : Ten Things You Should Know About People With Aphasia

Ruth, You can take a look at National Aphasia Association website at: http://aphasia.org. They list aphasia support groups at: http://aphasia.org/aphasia_community/aphasia_comm... As well as aphasia centers across the country (members from SCALE Baltimore center wrote this article): http://aphasia.org/aphasia_community/programs_and... Attending Aphasia Community Groups as well as programs in an aphasia center is highly recommended. If possible, engaging speech therapist for one-on-one therapy would be great. http://aphasia.org/aphasia_community/how_to_find_... We are developing an online service which will be available in a few months -- the service will provide several interesting ways for people with aphasia to use the internet, as well as to practice their language skills. There are some interesting articles on this blog, that I recommend you read. Finally, you may want to subscribe to be notified when new posts are available on the blog (approximately once a week). The easiest is to go to this page: http://aphasiacorner.com/blog/email-subscription
