Tory Radio : You never know

My Condolences Jon, a trying time for all concerned. I hope that he at least had some small comfort from your conversation before he passed. I don't know what your religious views are and I don't intend to shove mine down your neck, but just this once I will be praying for you all.

Tory Radio : Referendum time?

I think that we are aware of what happened in Ireland and any secondary unplanned referrundum would be viewed with mistrust and a fair amount of protest. Irelands second was unlawful, it was shameful and it should be forever imprinted upon free minded pepole everywhere. Oops I forgot I was talking about politicians there, so maybe your right. However, should that stop a plebsicate from taking place? No it should not.

Tory Radio : Referendum time?

Yes it is time to revisit the European commitment decision. It was an ill concieved idea at the time of EC, as we didn't get to decide to join the EU we need to decide if we want to join a Federal Europe. I for one don't. However, as much as I don't like it. If we have a referendum and for some unknown reason we all vote Yes then we need to go in for the whole thing, Eurozone and complete handover of sovereignty. This is the only way the EU experiment will suceed. If we continue to go the way that we are at the moment then the EU will fail. We will have a huge power vacuum in Europe which could end up being manipulated by our friends from Russkyia or Beijijng. If you thought the cold war had finished think again. The main land grab will decisions will be based on oil, gas, water and food. Russia is already starting to make attempts in the Frozen north and Argentina is tring the same in the south. Lets not get caught last in line!

Tory Radio : All this talk of fairness

Quite right, when you don't need it don't claim it. However, rightly or wrongly, Child Benefit was a universal benefit, it has now been removed and placed onto the means tested benefits list. This is right and proper and promotes equality. These decisions have been made, it is time to move forward and get on with it. Am I concerned that the CSR is going to hit me hard, yes I am, the 20% VAT rate will hit my pocket harder than most as I have a smaler budget to work with. The cuts to benefits may or may not hit me, I am still waiting to hear exactly what IDS has planned for me and my disabled friends. The fact remains, the labour government got us into this mess, it is time to knuckle down, stop moaning and move forward, yes it will be tough but we should see some sunshine in a few years!

I am appalled over the SDSR findings, There is no reason to stop British airpower from flying off the new carrier from the first day! If we retro fit some of the new Typhoons to Naval variant we have a credible airframe for Naval Air power. I suspect the gap in having a suitable airframe will be placed to a loss of skill in cat & trap flight along with the delay in JSF delivery. We have used Harrier in one form or another since its inception and have lost the skills. It may well mean that a huge training scheme is needed and that pilots and deck teams need to be training and visisting our allies to gain that experience now. The Navy have sold themselves into oblivion over these two ships that are likely to have no relevent useage for a decade. I can only assume that the MOD/NSC didn't want to pay for non completion, fine, then at least keep them relevent to national stratergy. Two blooming big pieces of British Soveriegn interest floating without adequate support, not impressed. MR4A shelving was a bad idea for defence but a good one for the economy, this airframe has been overdue it's retirement for some years. We should have gone for a new build airframe and offered the airframe for sale to other nations as well. Now we will have our SSBN's trailled and might as well shut down the Independant Nuclear Detterant CAS. As for the Army being rewarded for failing in Iraq and Afghanistan well that's a joke, that should never have been told. I do believe we may have handed over control of the Falklands to the Argies! As for defending the UK what are we going to use? Pea shooters and big flags saying go home, please?

I agree in part, especially the funding issue, however, party conference is a time when we as activists get to meet the people who are getting the job done, to get the information straight from the horse's mouth without having to remove bias from print or tv media. I for one think MP's should be able to claim for items that the Private sector can, what I object to is paying for someones duck house!

Tory Radio : Benefits cuts mean its too hard to live in London?

Oh they tried, messed it up, made it harder to claim if you were genuine and easier if you knew what the system was. I look forward to joined up thinking on this, but suspect like all benefits, it will be open to individual interpretation. Lets help as many people back into work as we can, Yes. Forcing people into work that will make their illnesses worse, not such a good idea. Supporting them to find alternative revenue streams not a bad move. I have come to the conclusion, due to my medical conditions, the only way to get back into some form of work is going to be self employment or working from home. Going to be interesting times ahead!

Tory Radio : Should child benefit be scrapped completely?

These cases that you mention are areas where it is possible to enforce specific uses. It is pretty difficult to do so for clothing, food and other needs that children have which the Child Benefit (CB) is supposed to cover. Universal Benefits are unaffordable, I agree, but then I would, I'm not likely to be in a position anytime soon to mean I could loose them. But for things like the Benefits listed above then perhaps means testing and financial targeting is the answer. Who knows, someone may well end up having to change tack .

There you go again tr, your using the 'fair' word. I suggest that perhaps, the targeted route is a way of equalising the the way it is paid. I know from experience, several families, who have through no fault of their own, been placed in a position where Child Benefit is the thing that pays for food and clothing. The idea that those who sit under the poverty line miss use it is true in some but not all cases. However, this is the same for all benefits. Those who rely on their Child Benefit payments to ensure they keep body and soul together, would not thank you for making their lives harder! I do think it should form part of the universal credit as being proposed by IDS. HMRC can target dual earners through the tax credit system, ergo they should be best placed to make these payments. Hang on a minute, don't they already?

Tory Radio : Can a Tory be charitable?

Sadly I have ceased giving directly to some charities due to the way in which they try and get you to increase your donation. A well known national children's charity were getting a steady but small monthly amount from me. I received one call where they asked me to increase my donation, I refused and that was fine. The next five calls were increasingly more like hard sales and I decided to stop my DD. This is a shame, the money won't add up to a lot, but it was a cause I felt strongly about. Now instead of a regular amount they get the odd £1 into a charity pot! The DD went to another charity that I support. Charity IS supposed to be bipartisan as a Tory member I am charitable. Now then I'll sponsor you to run a few miles if you are up for it again Johnathan.

That is a reasoned bit of thinking. I for one doubt that this will take place though, as it is a case of damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. I suspect there is a lot of advice being offered and none of it will be the same. The labour party has shown it's true colours once again, and unless Ed distances himself properly from the Unions, Labour can kiss re-election good bye for a while. Yes today's poll shows support for the party higher than the Conservatives right now, but I suspect that after conference season has finished that the polls will mean more.
