He confesses everything from his time before knowing Christ. It makes him human and vulnerable. I believe that kind of person is more able to help and influence without being dragged down by others pointing out his flaws. He never hid them, never pretended to be a perfect human, and, in doing so, gives permission for us "normals" to seek Christ like him without feeling we aren't a "special Christian" limited to baking casseroles for pot-lucks. We're children of God with the same Holy Spirit. The illustration, at the end, of the disciples checking Jesus' scars for proof of hope, resurrection, and rebirth, instead of being sources of shame - brilliant. That was the point. He's talking about what he did BEFORE he became a real Christian. It was my first though on reading, too: "How can he be saying this is ok?!" After reading it again I believe it was an example of how, in that period of his life, he carried a Costco and a Christian "card," but neither was real. While I was still thinking about that, this post came into my inbox. I can't wait to share the change in my life, now that I know how to explain it. You've helped release me from self-imposed doubt. I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one who regrets years of an un-qenuine relationship with God. I've had a fear that people wouldn't believe I was truly different and would say, "You've always been a Christian, what's different now." It's so hard to explain, but so amazing on this side of the change. It is amazing to know Him as our ONLY option, and know that He is more than enough!
