WoodyTone! : King's X: 'Dogman' All Killer, Tabor's Rig

Hi Jay, Thanks SO much for reminding me about "Dogman." Such a great album that brings back tremendously fond memories of that time. And Ty is right...the "Dogman Demos" sound (at least to my ears) better than the finished product. As much as I love Ty's skull-crushing tone on "Dogman," I will probably always consider his "Gretchen" tone to be the epitome of King's X and just a slight tick behind EVH's "brown sound" for the greatest hard rock tone on record.

AmpGAS! : Remember the Peavey Mace?

This is a great post and takes me WAY back. I used to own a Peavey Mace. My dad brought it home from a local auction and gave it to me. This would have been around 1984-1985. I can't vouch for the amp's ability to mimic Schon and/or Skynyrd tones. I liked Journey, I was REALLY into Yngwie, Van Halen, Judas Priest, and Rush. To my 15-year-old pea brain Peavey equipment was second-rate. That said, I did play through that amp a lot. I can remember that it was heavy as anything, it was ear-splittingly loud, and I thought the built-in phaser was TOTALLY cool. The last I remember the Mace was sitting in pieces in a storage room in my best-friend's house. I can't for the life of me remember what we were doing. I think we tried to take the Black Widow speakers out and do something with them. Kids those days! :)
