1. Avoiding regional books, because I think they were locally published and so not very good. In trying to turn this habit around, I have found books to put on my wish list.
2. Not seeing out culturally diverse books. My favorite recent finds are Rita Williams Garcia and Grace Lin.
3. Reading just old favorites. Once I fixed that habit, it became: reading just new books. It's a tough balance!
4. Focusing on literary books. I teach reluctant readers. Many of them need high interest and low vocabulary books. Are there good ones out there?
5. Avoiding graphic novels. Not sure I'm ready yet to change that one! Perhaps I could expand it to say avoiding books outside of my favorite reading styles and interests. For example, I don't read much science fiction. Am I missing out by that decision?
PS I liked this post! Thanks for starting it.
