Yeah, that was a big complain I had with the hunger games when I reviewed it. Religion is too absent which is tragic because had they included it, it would have smoothed over many plot holes. As far as culture on the whole... yeah, it's done its best to kick religious folk out and we've been too happy to leave.

Heh, a new form of the pascal's wager perhaps? Maybe it is a crutch. And maybe you (hypothetical atheist) don't need it, but how do you know others don't? Maybe some do. In which case, it's considered pretty cruel to kick the crutch out from under an injured or lame man who does. I'll have to remember that.

I did laugh some in movie 4 when the feministas got "the maximum sentence for running over the headless body of a vice president." I think it was like... 2-4 weeks. The show's dancing a line, but I don't think it's quite crossed it. If anything, I think they may have been trying to avoid some of the humor that would make them dated (like politics). I think they learned a lesson from "300 smackers".

Nah, see I disagree. The movie was pretty much perfectly designed. Trying to do much more with the story would have overwhelmed the structure the movie established and ruined the whole thing (examples: Transformers 2, AvP). Classic iconic movies are often those that keep things simple, but work the hell out of the basics.

Yesterday in the comments, someone quoted someone who said something the effect of “angst is much easier to write than nobility.” And this is very, very true. The same is true with sincerity over irony and inspirational over nihilism.

I'm also reminded of a passage from one of Lewis' Screwtape Letters. "The general rule which we have now pretty well established among them is that in all experiences which can make them happier or better only the physical facts are “real,” while the spiritual elements are “subjective”; in all experiences which can discourage or corrupt them the spiritual elements are the main reality and to ignore them is to be an escapist. ...The hatefulness of a hated person is “real” – in hatred you see men as they are, you are disillusioned; but the loveliness of a loved person is merely a subjective haze concealing a “real” core of sexual appetite or economic association."

Ryan Reynolds wasn't in the green hornet. And in this case... it kind of does. The point of the GL corp is very similar to the point of the Marine corp. It's not just about the individual - it's about the uniform. It's about being part of something larger. Towards the end I think they were going for a character arc of Ryan (or Hal, his character) gaining "the fire within" with... mixed results.

That speech is the only thing I hated about the movie (and I'm a big GL fan). And the point of the movie was that we've become involved in galactic affairs now whether we want to be or not, but the guardians usually try to avoid troubling primitive worlds with the affairs of the universe.

Much agreed, this movie was great. I've been rather surprised that reviewers have had trouble grasping that the GL corp is supposed to be a grand, epic scale (like classic space operas). If anything, I wanted less time on earth and more time in space and with the rest of the corp.

While the movie has a lot of the events of the book, they are completely out of order. (oh, and there's no green mist, no "7 magical swords", and there's a connection between Ramandu and the Wizard that we didn't get to see). Broadly? Accurate. On details? Not really.
