I love this post (and this movie). I completely agree that the audience would completely decry Spike in this movie if it weren't for the humor he brought in, part of which resides in the crazy clothing he wears, like that diving suit.

It might be interesting to look at the baubles they use in The Office, because so many of the characters possess them and provide humor at the same time. Just a thought.

I love the idea of comparing his sonnets with a play! This is awesome, good job.

I think that Shakespeare wasn't necessarily against love at first sight, but he did want to throw some words of caution out there. With Romeo and Juliet he's saying, look this is what can happen with love at first sight. But I think you're right, that he is kind of critiquing it.

Definitely still there. I will make sure to get a camera from the library.

It's interesting how writing the script for the show brought your attention to that! Romeo and Juliet does possess a lot of comedy, up until the end. The end is simply ironic. But I've always wondered what would have become of Romeo and Juliet if they hadn't died. I think they would have grown up and started fighting. Just my opinion.

Just out of curiosity, did any of the fanfiction you read when you were younger get published or anything like that? And is there a lot of garbage on there or does it need to reach a certain standard before it can be put on the site?

Hey I think Ladd is actually writing a lot about racism as well, in case you didn't know. His blog is http://laddandshakespeare.blogspot.com/

Just thought you might want to know!

I agree that it is really important to know the audience when it comes to Shakespeare. We do know he was at least partially motivated by money, so he would have to make some concessions for his audience.

For some reason, when I read that quote in your post, it makes me think of the difference between a BYU student at a basketball game versus that same student studying in the library. When we're surrounded by spectacle, we tend to buy into it more.
