As to the story of Rickover requiring someone to break off an engagment, the version I heard, from a Naval Nuke, was that someone was being interviewed by Rickover as a potential entrant, and told to pick up a phone and call it off then and there. He did, and asked if he got in, and Rickover sayd, "Not in my navy," so he asked if he could call again, because he was sure that the guy at the pizza shop was wicked confused. The candidate was accepted to the nuclear program.
