Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Asking people to "scoot to the middle" in church.

I am a career bad girl alto section resident. There is one in every choir! Altos are awesome--we can carry on a running conversation (mostly whispered) during the other's parts rehearsal, then actually read the alto line and sing it like we mean it. And we try really hard to refrain from laughter when the sopranos have to sing anything that's not the melody...

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Elbowing someone during a sermon.

I haven't checked all of the comments yet, but I'm sure many people would gladly buy the bag o'beards. They should be warned that this may be a long time coming, as I'm still waiting for the SCL Badger in a Bag.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Prayer Insults

Yes, our actions have consequences, like brushing and flossing is likely to mean less cavities. But sometimes those who brush faithfully end up with two root canals! (that might or might not be someone I know closely). That's when our lack of understanding really shows; when we've done all the right things and the consequences go against our natural expectations. I do believe thanking God for all things is scriptural. "In every thing give thanks" and "Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of Lights"

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : 2 words that are shaping culture right now.

I love that old fashioned word "homemaker". It really captures everything that goes into caring for all the people you love; friends, neighbors, family, etc.

I took it to mean that parenting advice from people who have had kids and been through the tough stages that you are going through right now is very helpful, while parenting advice from those who have never been a parent isn't. It's not a slam, just the way it is. I don't take driving advice from my 9 year old, even though she's sincerely convinced she knows how to drive.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Wondering why God makes life impossible sometimes.

Amanda, I hear you! My own youngest girls are less than 13 months apart (and to all of you who feel compelled to ask, yes, I know exactly how that happens. If you are confused I will be happy to explain it). We had 6 1/2 years between the first two children, and then only a year between the second and third. It was very different, and very hard, and some days were very dark. I look back now and realize that much of the time I was just praying to make it through the day. Not that I regretted my children, or don't love them and cherish them as gifts from God, but it is just HARD! I had some especially spiteful feelings towards the "happy happy sunshine mommies". It's hard for some people to understand how difficult a blessing can be...you just get so tired of ending every day covered in other people's bodily fluids. I'm grateful that the Lord sends encouragement from people like Jon at just the right moment!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Handbells.

Oh, the Raleigh Ringers are like the gods of handbells! Other ringers quake in awe as they pass through the aisles of tables at the handbell festival. Are you learning Shelley ringing, or 4-in-hand? Forget it, they each play 10 or 12 bells, not just perfectly but with zest and wit. You can't touch them....

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : The guy writing the check during the offering.

@buggy164 - shouldn't we give Jon the benefit of the doubt? Perhaps these are memories of childhood days (all of these things were very popular in the 80's, trust me) or maybe he saw a commercial for Older-American insurance featuring this heart warming scene. Whatever the source, I agree it was spectacular. I can see the frosted pumpkins on the calendar right now...

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Not knowing whether to sprint or be still.

Blessings to you, Dan! when I was growing up, my Dad was an old fashioned Get Crap Done Guy - they used to call them Ministers of Education. I know what it takes - most of them are really good examples of how the love and humility of Jesus Christ gets lived out by real people in their day to day lives. Take heart! Many of the people who never seem to notice or say thanks for your service today will see Christ in you when they start looking around for the real deal Christian.
