I can't talk about KOTOR, but as for Mass Effect, I think it's ~hardness~ is really overstated. I mean honestly, it's more like Dragon Age IN SPACE and with, well, THE MASS EFFECT instead of magic. I hesitated for ages playing it due to pretty much the same reason (that and the lack of proper gay LIs at first), but I ended up loving it heaps, perhaps even more so than Dragon Age. I would base it more on the question do you like shooters, because it's very shooty and if I weren't playing it with trainers in godmode, I probably would never have finished it.
