Saying goodbye is the story of my life. Because of my husband's job I have lived in 8 different countries, years at a time, making friends, good friends. I love my expat life because I'm adventurous at heart and love getting to know and understand diverse cultures, but the saying goodbye is a very sad side effect. Most of the time I knew I would not see our friends ever again, and that is definitely worse than thinking you'll get together again some time. The French have a saying you may know: Partir est mourir un peu (Leaving is dying a little).

Oh, Sine, these are priceless! They really take you back to Africa, don't they? I have a collection of my own somewhere on my blog. I'll go look for it.

Interesting view on having been or being in prison! Have I been to prison? Well, no, but I almost ended up in prison when visiting Uganda, long ago. I should probably repost that story again one of these days. It was quite terrifying at the time, but now it's good writing material...

Good luck with the rewrite! Hope you found a great editor; a good one can make all the difference. A bad one? Don't get me started ;)

Having lived in Africa, West and East, and a few other interesting places, I understand your feelings. I know how wonderful it is for things to work so well most of the time in the US. Most of the time (I have stories!)

Natalie, you do have a memory here! I've been on plenty of trains growing up European, but I certainly would have worried about that night time adventure. One of my wishes for the future is going to South Africa (I've been west, east and north) and of course see Cape Town. Going by train really would be a great way to see more of the countryside.

This is a fun and interesting post. As a serial expat I've lived in many foreign houses and got used (or not used) to their -- to me -- strange characteristics. My house in Moldova had a urinal and a bidet in the guest bathroom, the one used for people dropping by for a cup of coffee or a meal.

But no toilet roll holder and no towel bars in your American house? That seems very odd and uncharacteristic! Did the former owners not need them or is the house new? When we bought our present American house some years ago, there were no knobs or grips on any of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and not because they were designed to not need them. The reason was simply that the house was newly built and they'd forgotten to put them on.

Your house looks great. May you enjoy it with all its foibles!

Not foolish! I so agree with you. We often underestimate the importance of recognizing and appreciating the small joys in life. If we stop for a minute here and there to be conscious of such small pleasures we increase the quality of our life. (And I haven't even had my coffee yet...)

Congratulations! I remember the many publishing contracts I have signed over the years (all with the same house), and it is a daunting process indeed. You are certainly going about it in the right way and I am impressed. I wasn't nearly as savvy the first time.

Great post, Sine! I've been circling around reading toilet stories and having a good time. Now I'd like to know if that first photo with the red panties is yours...
