Ooooh man I had an illustrated version of this as a kid. Why you pick this particular one for a kid I can't tell you, but CHECK OUT the Loathly Lady:

Ur-queen of Crone Island (Crone Island is where the women of Metafilter go when they want to Ban Men). Here she is getting married:

Hoooly damn. I was not a critical reader as a kid but even I knew this was some straight up weird "WOMEN WHAT ARE THEY WHO CAN UNLOCK THEIR SECRETS" bullshit at age 7 or so.

If you go too far with this sort of things it eventually reverses itself: I just googled roach clips and I DEFINITELY had a bunch of cool hair thingies like that as a kid, so that means my mom didn't know what they were either. She wouldn't have let me get them if she knew - she got flustered and refused to even answer when I asked what the cool little rose-in-a-tube thing at gas stations were. (PREEMPTIVE EXPLANATION FOR 23 YEAR OLD ME: THEY ARE POORLY DISGUISED CRACK PIPES.)

So following that logic, just think of all the cool things the children of Toasties are going to be able to do/get away with!

I still vividly remember my mom telling me that a virgin was someone who had never given birth. I was hearing the word in Christmas carols, and felt vaguely disappointed that Mary was just someone having a baby for the first time rather than something cooler.

I think I also mostly knew she was lying from how she said it, but couldn't come up with an alternative....

And yeah, it can be basically sink-or-swim in that they may throw you in with no training at all (more common in some fields than others)...but again, that's a probably not very good supervision decision that somebody made

Beachlass - serious answer, the Ask a Manager blog. She might have some 'basics' somewhere you could start with, but honestly just keeping an eye on how she approaches problems and what the manager's job is or should be in a particular situation, has been hugely helpful. Managing as a skill you can practice and improve at is a super helpful mindset, as is the simple (but groundbreaking for me) realization that in addition to stressing me out or being a pain, my supervisor might in fact...not be managing me well. Maybe they really *aren't* giving me clear goals or promoting my independence or whatever, it's not solely that I'm doing a bad job meeting my goals. It actually helps me a lot to thing of supervisors as co-workers in a real sense, where their job is Manage You So You Can Do Your Job and your job is Do Your Job.

Hey Mallory you sly dog, I'm going to choose to believe that the fact that my RSS reader truncated your headline to today's Prudie column as "Help! My wife is wonderful, but she gained 50 pounds and I have no feelings" was intentional.

(new-ish lurker here) I didn't want to hijack a sad thread above - there's a Boston toasties group? Where do I find it?
