I got a chuckle out of that definition of "free-range," too. I definitely let my kid run ahead of me when she was 4, but that was because I started teaching her to stay on the sidewalk as soon as she could walk and knew that she'd stop when I yelled, "Hey! Stop!" If that's not the case with the LW's kid, all she has to say to the other mother is, "Hey, my kid's impulse control sucks. Can you hold her hand on the way to school?"
