ha, i love the "hotter than potter" sticker ;) I also haven't read anything by Diana Wynn Jones, but loved Potter, Narnia, and His Dark Materials books so it sounds like i should give some of hers a try too!

i feel like i rec'd this recently, maybe to you? if so, pardon the redundancy! but you should definitely try BIANCA: a novel of Venice by Robert Elegance. it's set in the 1500s, but is an amazing, beautifully told story.

i dont know if i could pick just THREE settings/era's, but i will say i adore books set in the south, new orleans, charleston, savannah, mountains of NC...love hearing about the culture!

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, but hope he gets well soon! And I'm similar to you in that really stressful periods in my life are marked by heavier volumes of reading and movie watching. They're the perfect escape.

in terms of short fun classics i dont know if he counts, but have you ever read O. Henry's short stories? they give me goosebumps, not in a creepy way, but because they're so clever. i would also recommend any Sherlock Holmes stories for the same reason!
