So here's what you did wrong... which is a really condescending way to start advice but I don't mean it to be so... You should have screwed the screw into the bottle and then pulled it out with the hammer. Hammering it in makes the screw go straight in and gives it little to pull on. Unless it was a synthetic cork in which case it might have worked.
I actually opened a wine bottle once in a similar way for the same reason. I used a large screw, screwed it in, then used pliers to get it out. You can also just push a cork in if you are going to drink the whole bottle :)

I haven't, that sounds awesome! I'll put it on my to-buy list on Amazon. I actually ended up switching courses of study mid college so I won't ever return to the lab, but I do have a job in my actual field (video production), I just miss science now and then.

I loved chemistry lab. I think it's because I stated baking at such a young age. Since I did not end up working in a scientific field, I'm a bit jealous of you.

I had a teacher who taught our class that A.D. means "after death." When I said "I don't remember it cause its latin but I know that's not right" She said "well thats what I taught so for the test it IS right." *face palm* I think she really thought that's what it means.
