We're talking about this in my office right now. Currently the students are charged a $200 Special Programs fee (in addition to the technology fee) when they study abroad but that money doesn't go to our study abroad budget. We're not sure where it goes. We're trying to perhaps eliminate the fee altogether.

Once when I was visiting Beirut I was in a service headed to Achrafieh to go to ABC mall. I'd never taken a service there so wasn't exactly sure where to get out. Knowing full well that I'd asked to go to Achrafieh the cab driver passed it and kept going and going. When I finally realized something wasn't right and asked about Achrafieh he claimed that since I hadn't asked him to stop he didn't (not sure what his motivation would be for taking me PAST my destination).

Anyway, I had had a very upsetting day and then at that moment got a very upsetting text message. I started crying in the car and the driver thought I was crying over my missed stop. He got very worried and tried to console me and said don't cry, I'll take you to Achrafieh.

I could never figure out why people called it that either. So stupid! I met some college aged kids this summer who claimed "Beirut" and "Beer Pong" were two different games. Beirut being as you described, throwing the ping pong ball, and Beer Pong using actual paddles. (Though I've never actually seen paddles used and I've heard it called both.)

I have only spent about 2 months in Lebanon so far but most of these already ring quite true for me. Especially numbers 6 and 7.

Yay! So excited for you!

I can't help but compare my new school to my old one in Brooklyn. And you're right, it's kind of unfair. But I'm loving it!
