The actual diagnosis I got was "abnormal uterine bleeding." Apparently more estrogen in my system would help, but I can't take it (I'm on the minipill because of migraines). Doc #2 suggested eating more foods with naturally occurring estrogen, which I have half-assedly tried to do. Either way, this year's bout has been MUCH less panic-attack-inducing than last year's. (Last year was four months straight, this year was like... two actual periods and random spotting spread over two months.) And I definitely felt crazy and ignored it for a while too. I eventually got to a second doc (both were gynos) who knew what it was, was very clear that it's nothing to worry about, though on the other hand couldn't do anything to make it better. According to doc #2, it has something to do with the estrogen/progestin imbalance caused by being on the minipill. If it makes you feel any better, mine did eventually stop (though still happens occasionally).
