The Daily Tail : Pet advice meets art

These are really cool--and reminiscent of post-WWII design styles and colors. And indeed, especially the "improved scenery" message--I'm preparing a number of large interpretive signs plus some small functional ones for a conservation area and NO ONE pays attention to the "clean up after your dog" signs. A good laugh might make the difference!

The Daily Tail : How I began rescuing wild cats

What a wonderful story--thank you for finding it! I'd been wondering about the place since I'd seen the videos and also a few articles on social networking sites. Vanity fur is simply cruel. In primitive cultures where fur is necessary and every part of every animal is thankfully, often reverentially, used, the practice makes at least a little sense, but we modern humans don't need to wear animal skins if what Carole saw there is the result of it.

Wonderful article, Daniela--not every dog is like Lassie! I do hope they find the woman who is lost, though if her dog left her I doubt there's much hope.

The Daily Tail : Should crows be pets?

People used to keep crows as pets all the time--for rural kids, they were as common as dogs and cats as pets. It sounds really cool, but they would usually steal a young one from a nest and finish raising it so that it would imprint on the person and their home. They were never kept indoors then as most people didn't keep their pets indoors.

The Daily Tail : Having pets, having babies

In a related idea, I know two couples who tried for years to have their own baby, but only conceived after they adopted pets, one with dogs, and one with cats. That nurturing instinct awakens with our precious animal companions!

The Daily Tail : Place cat food away from water

I don't leave food out, so it's not a problem, but I also have a water bowl in almost every room. It's really helped everyone with water consumption, especially the older ones, and helps keep the water clean because I have a few who like to play in it...

The Daily Tail : Pop art cats! Fiona, Keely, Bubi & Boo

Daniela, I LOVE PhotoShop's filters! Just to add life to a dull layout or provide something very different to a customer, I've posterized and ink-outlined and saturated and spattered many an image. I have a favorite that I'm turning into a tote bag imprint. Right now, with all these black cats, I can hardly pass it up when I want to play. I also enjoy actually creating a painted pop art image, but don't get as much time for that. I'm from Andy Warhol's home town and grew up seeing his work all over the place so it was an early influence, and both his work and derivatives are still very popular.

The Daily Tail : A dog afraid of the storm

Mimi, supermom of the Big Four, was TERRIFIED of thunderstorms, probably because she was out in so many. I took her in at the end of July during a two-week period of frequent storms, and the second night she was here she awoke me--very difficult to do--by rattling the door on her cage. She was standing right by the door waving her tail back and forth, and when I opened the cage door to pet her she took off for my bedroom leaving her five day old kittens sleeping, tucking herself into the four-inch high crawl space under my dresser--"You take care of the kids, I'll take care of myself!" She used to simply disappear at the slightest sound of thunder, but she's a little braver now and it takes a real storm to get her to go into hiding, though she'll kind of hang out near me if she's not sure.

The Daily Tail : The best cat litter

With nine cats I LOVE clumping litter for their sake. Even with plenty of boxes scooping was always a chore and I was always concerned if they were walking around on pee because none have ever liked more than two inches of litter, and they tend to dig. Yesterday's News is really wonderful, and it's what I used for the kittens because there's no way they can accidentally ingest it like clay or scoopable or any other substance because the litter pieces are too big. My other favorite is wood pellets that my local Agway sells for $4.00 for 50 lbs.--smells great, absorbs liquids and it's also recycled from sawdust and wood chips. World's Best doesn't really work here because of a damp basement, and my cats don't like it on their paws. I had also been concerned about corn waste for another reason--commercially grown corn is sprayed with so many chemicals, most notably ethoxyquin, that residue is left in the corn even after it's processed (this isn't so much a worry with locally grown corn from smaller farmers). I never got an answer as to where the corn came from, but it was assumed that it came from commercial processors after the corn was processed for animal feed. Ethoxyquin was one of the first reasons I quit feeding any cat food with corn in the mix back in the mid 90s. I guess we all need to look into this.

The Daily Tail : Puppy in Disguise

I attended college in a very small town where my first black cat rescued me. He went everywhere with me, even to classes sometimes, greeting people along the way, running up and down trees as I walked more slowly than him, hopping onto my shoulder when he got tired. He liked it best when we walked with our friend in a wheelchair because he could curl up in my friend's lap--or trot along in the chair's shadow on a hot day! He would have you know he did not think he was a dog, nor was he acting like a dog!
