I use Overdrive a lot now, and I don't really mind the wait times (my library system doesn't seem to have more than three or four holds on any of the e-books I'm interested in), but the small, sad audiobook selection is KILLING ME. I don't think they've added a new non-fiction audiobook in at least three months, unless the "sort by date added" feature doesn't work properly.

Is there an Oyster for audiobooks yet? I tried Audible but I don't really feel the need to keep audiobooks (or e-books either) so I'd love a subscription/unlimited streaming format.

We Need to Talk About Kevin is one of those books that I feel I really SHOULD read, but that somehow doesn't really appeal to me. Maybe it's the letter format? I like epistolary novels sometimes, but I feel like a really serious book written in letters might be too much.

Hmm.

Me too. At first I was all, Johanna totally knows but is playing dumb because she doesn't want to pressure Krissi to open up to her...

And then I realized that I was just assuming she was observant about her family in the same way she was observant about other things. She definitely had blinders on about that.

I want a sequel in which Krissi moves to London with Johanna and they have wonderful adventures and we get a coming-of-age story from his point of view.

"not enough media stresses the importance of friendship as equal to romantic relationships."

SO MUCH THIS. I was really pleased that Johanna and John Kite are in friendshipland at the end of the book.

This is exactly why that part bothered me and I couldn't quite articulate it, so thank you for reading my mind!

The scene where she cuts herself just seemed so... sudden? Like, Johanna did not seem to be in any way depressed to me, or in any state that would cause her to want to harm herself, but maybe I missed some signs? IDK.

And I agree that having Johanna get pregnant would have turned this into an after school special, and taken a decidedly unfeminist turn (because OF COURSE the girl having sex with multiple guys gets pregnant. That is the moral of every shitty story ever. Glad Moran skipped that.)

I frowned at that Honey I Shrunk the Kids reference, too. GET IT TOGETHER, CAITLIN (AND HER EDITOR).

Can you imagine if there was a job where all you did was fact-check pop-culture references in other people's books? It would be the best kind of editing job ever.

If I have to read about one more charming boy with a CROOKED SMILE I am going to punch things. Or else just give up entirely on Young Adult.

After reading your comment I just spent a ridiculously long time (and several very embarrassing internet search terms) looking for a clip from Hal Sparks's standup about how gendered insults don't even make any sense. Because when we want to say a guy is strong and brave, we say he's ballsy, and when we want to insult a guy for being weak we say he's a pussy -- but balls are the weakest part of a man and the vagina is pretty much the strongest part of a woman.

I keep wanting to read that book Cunt: A Declaration of Independence, but I haven't gotten to it yet...

At this point that's not a conspiracy theory at all. I don't know if gerrymandering is an issue in Australia as well, but here the politicians basically rig the election districts to the point where they're shaped so incredibly absurd that it's so obvious what they're doing. "Oh, let's indent the district here so we can avoid that poor neighborhood. But round it out over here near the private schools..."

The part that gets me most in that clip is the CEILING FANS. The poors are now allowed to gently circulate their air in the stifling heat? Well, I never...

And the judgment about being a crappy parent is the worst in terms of our judgmental social framework. There was a story in the news here recently about a woman working at McDonalds who couldn't afford childcare, so her daughter played at a park down the street while she worked. Someone reported that the kid was unchaperoned, and the mother was arrested. They took her kid away from her and she also lost her job. And every comment section on the articles about it was filled with people calling her a bad parent, but I think the blame in so many cases like this comes down to the very selective budget cuts at the state and national level. There's basically no free childcare anymore, really, so what is a parent supposed to do? Not work and be labelled a lazy welfare queen by the same hacks cutting benefits? Work and end up in jail because you can't find someone to watch your child?

I think I need to go to bed now. Or maybe have some wine.
