Heresy Corner : Selling Downton to the Chinese

Wonder if Brief Encounter has the same appeal in China that it does in Japan - that buttoned up Brit thing. Never seen Downton myself. I managed to avoid Terry and June for decades then saw one episode on Dave last year and boy it was scary.

Heresy Corner : In Syria, the right thing to do may be the wrong thing to do

Great to see Milliband standing up and saying 'Hold on'. Cameron's eagerness to embrace Obama on this is madness - as the Telegraph says he now looks spectacularly weak, being outflanked not just on the left but outflanked on the right of his own party, where Farage's scepticism has deep resonance.

Great piece H. 'The balance of probability at the moment must be that Western intervention will make the situation worse.' Agree absolutely. This is an 8th or 9th century conflict - Sunni against Shia, Arab against Persian.

Heresy Corner : Why do so many Nobel laureates look like Richard Dawkins?

Craig Brown is a genius. Dawkins has had his share of exasperating encounters with Islamic obscurantism - eg on salt and fresh water not mixing - but he has acquired an aggressive persona and wants to live up to it. Alas.

Yes he is a white man H but he is also a member of a very distinct ethnic minority, the Scottish-Italians, a minority that suffered a lot of discrimination in Scotland in the 20t century - and has contributed enormously to British society.

the polytheism thing is used as a stick by Sunni fundies to beat up the Sufi and the Shia but of course Sunni fundies (and Christian fundies) themselves pick and choose from the auld stuff. Servitors of Chthulthu they are!

Damn second para not fully quoted. Deleted post and start again! - Excellent stuff H. 'As for Laurie's claim that "men grow up expecting to be the hero of their own story [while] women grow up expecting to be the supporting actress in somebody else's", that may have been largely true once, when the only long-term career open to most women was marriage and motherhood, but surely isn't any more.' I'd mark the change's funniest first appearance in fiction as one of the twists in that wicked Amis/Conquest novel The Egyptologists! Great conclusion, love that on the Wags and Lizzie. Very true.

Heresy Corner : TalkSPORT sends Tom Holland to Bantanamo Bay

That's a cracker H - wonder if Cif would put him up to talk about it! The impressuion I get is that suggesting tgat Mohammed is a nonhistorical figure is not a problem - but if you insult him it is a problem. Holland seems to have been respectful in his approach so don't see the problem.

Heresy Corner : The Problem with Humanist Weddings

'Unlike Humanist funerals, which do answer to a particular need, Humanist weddings strike me as inessential. ' Hmm as Saint Kenny Dalglish was wont to say, Mibbes aye, Mibbes naw' H! Depends on how society agrees to see them and how of course the individual sees them. My mum's humanist funeral here in Glasgow was seen by some of the more orthodox neighbours as a bit off the wall, now they are ten a penny (for the ferryman as it were). Humanist weddings are now commonplace as well here. They answer a need, which is what social conventions are for.

Heresy Corner : Explaining the peace paradox

Hmm - what di we know? Medics Against Violence was founded in Glasgow by young medics who realised they were treating far more A&E stabbings tha were being recorded by the cops. If someone came in with a slash or a stab and walked out without talking to the cops then nothing had happened. Ranger and Celtic youth teams payed each other at Fiirhill on Monday night. The cops said they only arrested a handful people, but i live near Firhill and there were street fights going on all round that have not appeared in the official accounts.

Heresy Corner : Dawkins and the Flying Horse

I disagree H - I think a quiet funeral in the style that was (I gather) the US norm for militray and political bods after the American Civil War - so little common emotional ground. I think Salmond has it right about the funeral.
