North Park Street : What is it that makes ASM not work well?

My premise does presuppose acceptance of a Student Government that focuses on both providing student services and representation in shared governance in addition to an arm that does include advocacy through whatever form it takes (be it grassroots campaigning or other tactics). Thus I suggest my framework for analyzing ASM within the context of its current delineated goals, which seem to be generally accepted, although the balance of these goals seems to be the fundamental arena of dispute between varying ASM ideologies.

North Park Street : Innovations needed, but not at expense of 'the game'

I absolutely agree that UW needs more money, but considering the utter inability of UW-System, student leaders and UW-Madison to mount an effective lobby effort to lessen the blow of budget cuts and the reality that there won't be additional funding anytime soon, drops in the bucket are needed.

North Park Street : Bucky's Biggest Moments, 2011

Simple solution: vote for one, refresh and vote for the other. Funny that you should pick out "beloved chancellor" but not "CEO attacks" or Montee Ball stiffed" as your example of subjectivity. Or what about "Vice Chair booted" "lure international students" or "Mayor Soglin declares war"? Or asking why I didn't put an adjective before NBP, say "slashes system budget" for Governor Walker or use "waste time chanting" instead of "rally against" for the Budget Repair Bill. But "beloved" is definitely the word to describe the en mass campus feelings about Biddy, anyone thinking otherwise is clearly out-of-touch with campus.

North Park Street : ASM Budget: By the Numbers

Do it and we'll see what happens...I'd be more than happy to present on a range of issues. Here are some sample topics I could speak about. - Why do we fund student stuff? How to develop a sound fiscal philosophy - No that's not what democracy looks like: student government in the 21st century - Long-term planning in student government: life isn't just a semester plan. - Money Doesn't Grow on Out of State Trees: what a single budget decision does to the everyday student

North Park Street : ASM Constitutional Crisis Day 7 - ASM Vice Chair Beth Huang Ordered Removed

I would disagree on there being a difference between seats filled by election and seats filled by appointment, since there is no distinction between the roles, expectations or powers of either when it comes to Student Council. True, the SJ order is limited in scope to the vacating of the election, but consequently the derivative of their having served time for an election which now did not occur should also come into effect. As for implications on the appointment (not hiring) process, I think the entire ordeal absolutely comes into play as both a matter of character and public image. Nothing screams cronyism more than the political allies of those removed from council then reappointing those same students to council. Also, everyone should be reminded of the fact that we have two individuals who readily acknowledged an intentional violation of election rules and treated the issue with such carelessness and disregard as to miss or nearly miss a gratuitous deadline for completing punitive service and of abusing their powers within ASM to shirk responsibility.

North Park Street : UW President Reilly Shirks Shared Gov, Asserts Power to Extend Ward's Term

The decision was a unilateral one. That people weighed in on the decision at some point (in this case, after the initial suggestion came from Reilly) doesn't negate the unilateral power the System President exercised in this case. A more appropriate process for this decision would have involved convening the full search committee (a shared governance committee). If the search committee decided that within the goals it sets out for finding and hiring a new chancellor the time frame was too short or that the interim appointment should be extended, then they should be the ones to make the recommendation. Unfortunately this process was not followed, and instead, Reilly opted to make a decision, plant the seed with influential individuals in the community and coax out support under the guise of an organic suggestion from those outside the President's office.

North Park Street : Are Incendiary Tactics Really The Best Approach?

A swift response, sure. Even a vocal response, ok - I'm not sure I agree it's the best approach here, but would certainly be open to being convinced. However, storming a press conference and disrupting the presentation - that's where I think it's over the top and leads to unnecessary inflammation of the issue. This incident plays perfectly for the outside-of-Madison/Milwaukee GOP rank and file audience which will certainly be targeted with this issue.

North Park Street : Wisconsin 2012 Senate Race: Who will be the Democrat's candidate?

Baldwin's ability to win successful campaigns in the 2nd district is due entirely to success in Madison. In her initial election bid against popular professor John Sharpless (Republican), the vote was considerably closer, because the campus/downtown Madison votes split more significantly than in the later elections. I think Adam's assessment of MKE/MSN v rest of state divide would trouble her chances to win the primary. I'm inclined to agree with Adam that Ron Kind is probably the Democrat with the best shot right now to win a general. Perhaps Kenosha State Representative Peter Barca can ride a wave of anti-Republicanism into 2012, and there are a handful of other potential Democrats in the state who could make viable candidates, but I have difficulty seeing any of them fending off Tommy Thompson. Competing against Mark Neumann or a Republican state rep might be a different story.

North Park Street : Shit My Legislature Does: Wisconsin Recall Primer and Predictions

I'm still thinking Hopper & Kapanke are the only seats that might flip. I'll give Kapanke's to Schilling and say 50-50 for Hopper. To be honest, I don't see any of the other Republicans losing their recalls. Looking at the Daily Kos poll, I'm a little surprised you have Olsen losing in the district, 50% favorables, 50% pick Olsen over Clark with a 53% disapproval & less than 50% are anti-Walker. Seems like pretty good numbers for Olsen.

Are you suggesting the chemicals result in obesity? Personally, I'm a fan that my food will stay so long. Also, regulating the food industry further by prohibiting certain current practices would drive up prices considerably, exacerbating Adam's issue #1. I'm looking forward to the day synthetically-created meat becomes widely available.

North Park Street : ASM's "Legal Deal" memo another blight on 18th session Council

The Nixon tapes weren't meant to be public either, would you suggest that the events surrounding the Watergate scandal should also have been "taken down?" The general rule of thumb is, if you don't want someone to see it, don't write it down (and definitely don't let it be emailed out). As for the apology, I think Templeton is 100% in the right in demanding an apology on behalf of the students in the College of Letters and Science. In fact, I would be disappointed if my representative didn't sign on. In fact, there are at least 11 other reps who should be putting together a piece of legislation with Templeton to request the issuance of a public apology or perhaps a censure by the Council. I like the idea of a legal services fund for students (perhaps I am biased by my future occupation), and in re: keg ordinance, I would strongly recommend getting in touch with Alder Resnick who is already working on this issue.
