http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/ : do you really play with your kids?

I really don't like playing and I've had this conversation with lots of moms who feel the same way. I feel even guiltier about this as an adoptive mom because tons of what I've read says how great play is for attachment and connection. I totally enjoy reading to them, baking with them, taking them to parks and fun places but playing - especially any kind of make-believe type thing - is really tough for me.

We also chose to adopt through foster care first & and I am now pregnant which has led to all sorts of "That always happens" which leads us to explaining that this was the way we planned it. I was even asked if we would be "sending the boys back" now that we were pregnant by one person.

Nap time + Apples : The Babies R Us Meltdown

I hate Babies R Us/Buy Buy Baby equal to the amount I hate Bed, Bath & Beyond. I feel like those babies stores are designed to instill fear in the mind of every potential parent. I'm avoiding them at all costs.

http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/ : adoption resources, and a question

We have been foster parents for about 7 months (3 kids in that time). None of the kids we have cared for have displayed major attachment issues. Sometimes I have a hard time determining what may be attachment related and what may just be "being a 2 year old," especially when it comes to issues of control. I just read Love & Logic for Early Childhood and I did find some of their methods to be helpful, especially giving age appropriate choices (blue or red shirt? apples or blueberries?, etc.) Also, they suggest negative behaviors being responded to with empathy and then implementing the consequence. Maybe you have heard all of this before but the book is worth looking at (try to ignore their "this is the only parenting method that works" attitude). Thanks for being willing to share your experience. We know as we continue to foster (and possibly adopt) kids that we will face attachment issues more severe than what we have experienced this year. I'm praying that Kembe will have peace and for your family's continued strength during this transition.

http://www.rageagainsttheminivan.com/ : adoption and loss

Thanks for sharing this. We are fostering (possibly adopting, you know how it is) a toddler right now (along with her infant brother). She is in the same place - just unable to articulate how she is feeling so it comes out in tantrums. I so wish there was a way to read her mind but like Kohana said, I'm not sure that would help me deter her behavior. It is important to talk about the difficulties of foster care/adoption. As we have unfortunately seen recently what happens when people are are uniformed and uneducated about attachment issues prior to adoption. I think you have done a great job of respecting your son's process and being honest about what is going on in your family right now.
