Sock Monkey Sound : September 11th, 2001 | Where were you 10 years ago today? And many other questions that have no an

I had an early class at NIU that day, and was the person who informed my entire class about what had happened. Then, the Braves had band practice and went out afterwards. I am having a difficult time figuring out how it is even remotely possible that was a decade ago. I can still remember many of the distinct feelings, emotions, and ideas that were going through my head that day. This anniversary has also reminded me of all the craziness that followed: the anthrax scares, the alert levels, and, of course, the "annihilate the terrorists" marquee at Uncle Nicks.

Great job, Marky. I agree on all counts. "For Emma..." was exactly what I wanted to hear a few years ago, and this one is that and some things I didn't now I wanted to hear. His approaches toward mood and texture are fascinating. There are so many "I-wish-I-would-have-thought-of-that" moments on this record.

Plus, I want Nate Mendel to be working on the Sunny Day Real Estate (3rd) comeback album that was supposed to happen. I saw them play a new song and say they were going to have a new album almost 2 years ago!

I don't completely agree or disagree with you here. I am enjoying the record to an extent, but I can't deny the validity of some of your points. For all the talk of this record being recorded in a garage on analog, it really just sounds like every other FF record after the first two. The songs are not knockouts, but they grew on me after a few listens. I have a hard time not liking DG because of my musical roots--and because of his attitude--but sometimes they don't sound all that different than Nickleback. Oh well. I'll keep trying.

That song is called "License to Hide." The '70s rock opera vibe is a new sound for them. The album version features Lisa Lobsinger from Broken Social Scene. Ken was making all kinds of good, bad jokes in Milwaukee too.

I decided not to exit the crowd with all the other 30+ members of the audience to check out Brendan Benson. I enjoyed watching Ken and Jon from The Posies having an unusual amount of fun while playing with Brendan. I have to admit, though, that the songs were not really hitting me. I can maybe chalk it up to the fact that I’d never heard them before, or the fact that I just got done watching an old, favorite band of mine. Either way, I did think all three bands were worth seeing, and did not regret going—even if only one of the bands left me with the very best feeling I can get from a concert: “1993, 1993, 1993.”

Also, I have to respectfully dispute your argument about The Posies being a lesser-Teenage Fanclub. Teenage Fanclub is also one of my favorite bands, and definitely do share some similarities to The Posies (‘60s influences, great harmonies, etc.), but The Posies arrangements are quite a bit more complex, their tones are often more biting, and their lyrics are darker in tone. When I think of The Posies, unlike Teenage Fanclub, I don’t think of smooth, sunny, and simple melodies. Don’t get me wrong, both bands are probably in my top 10; I just think they have some striking differences.

The real reason I went to the show was The Posies. And I was anything but disappointed. They mostly played songs from the new album and Frosting on the Beater (which I think is their best album...sorry, Ken). I must say though that the new Posies album, Blood/Candy, is a pop-gem, better than anything they've done since Frosting on the Beater. They’ve saved their best impressions of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and Cheap Trick for very late in their career, but still sounds like most Posies albums—only better. Luckily for me, most of their set in Milwaukee consisted of tracks from those two albums. Jon’s guitar tone was devastating, blasting right in my ear. I took my earplugs out and let it hurt. I loved every single song they played. Also, I think they were drunk—very drunk—and appeared to be having more fun than any band I had seen in quite some time. My only complaint would be Ken’s vocals being too quiet.

I appreciate your the review, Alex. I hope I can stumble into a concert like this at random someday! I saw the same show in Milwaukee one night earlier, but I purchased my tickets months ago. My stumble was more of an eager, steady-footed sprint. Seeing as I was at the impressionable age of 14 in "1993, 1993, 1993," not to mention the fact that The Posies are one of my all-time favorite bands, my opinions on the show are going to be slightly different—and severely biased. First of all, I thought Aqueduct were entertaining, although they lost quite a bit of steam after their first few songs. One of their songs was very familiar to me and I couldn't place it. I later found out that my wife had their album and I had heard the first track on it a few times.

Also, the whinning-- and yes it definitely exists--comes from a couple of things. First of all, any job where it's part of your job to make a large group of other people do their job is bound to be extemely stressful. It appears you feel that the stress/whine ratio is skewed. Maybe it is--I don't know; I've only had a few jobs. But with every job I have had, I had co-workers who complained constantly and co-workers who did their job, smiled, and tried to be good at it. Teaching has been no different.

I love you Dave, but you are over-simplifying a very complex issue. Most teachers don't have 12-month contracts, they simply elect to stretch their pay over a 12-month period (and are paid accordingly). Outside of the class time, most teachers I work with spend incredible amounts of time grading, planning, tutoring, coaching, etc. Most teachers I know leave school every night exhausted, spend their evenings pouring over ideas as to how to improve their craft, and arrive every morning feeling confident and enthusiastic. Most teachers I know feel constant pressure to improve and refine their abilities, and are glad to take on the responsibility. Are their some problems with Unions and tenure? Sure. But you are making unfair generalizations. I wish you would consider the enourmous challenges facing public schools in low-income areas before casting judgement on the many people working hard to improve our communities. Teachers have many of the same concerns you do, and are trying to help.

Maybe we need to hash this REM thing out some day, Chip. Don't get me wrong, the first 4 REM albums are some of my favorite music ever--I think we are in agreement about that. But REM did some amazing stuff in the '90s too. Sure, Out of Time and Monster were spotty, but I like Automatic for the People every bit as much as Murmur, and for completely different reasons. Also, I am still discovering things I love about New Adventures in Hi-Fi, and even Up. Should we have a Chip-sits-down-and-listens-to...gasp...post-Document-REM-songs intervention?
