Atheist Revolution : Confronting Our Own Hypocrisy and Repudiating Bad Behavior

This whole thing started with the so called elevatorgate debacle. An incident that was way overblown in the first place. All of a sudden, one had to have the "right" opinion or be shunned at best or browbeaten to submission. Some drunk guy hit on Ms. Watson on an elevator and made her uncomfortable. He didn't threaten her or grab her. He was just drunk and loutish. Admittedly, he was out of line, but no one has the right to always feel comfortable. From this little acorn a giant shit oak grew.

Atheist Revolution : Some Call for \'Cease Fire\' in Atheist Infighting

When one makes discussion of a subject taboo, it is now sacred. The first rule of skepticism is NOTHING is sacred. I actually agree with most of what the A+ side of things wants, and I have a genuine fondness for Ms. Christina and Mr. Lee. However, I reserve the right to think for myself. Deal with it.

Reason Being : Mocking Religious Beliefs

Anyone who knows me knows to never ask me what I think because I'll tell you. I realized at the age of 11 that my bullshit detector didn't have an "off" button. If my response offends you, you shouldn't have asked.

Atheist Revolution : A Flawed Defense of the Catholic Church

I'm an atheist, I probably have been for a long time. That being said, I went to Catholic school from K through 8th grade, and it was a good education(this was the 70's). At times it saddens me that the fine priests, nuns and lay teachers who were instrumental to my development will always be lumped in with the low-life molesters and those who covered for them. These folks were good people who really cared about my education, and I hate the church for tarring their memory.

Reason Being : If god existed…he/she/it would have a lot to answer for...

The whole idea of god allowing evil things to happen kind of irks me. I don't think that the blame or the credit should go to a being that does not exist. A lot of the "evil" that happens is preventable, by us. Now it's true that we can't as yet stop a hurricane or an earthquake, but there are many things that we can do to make the world a better place. We just choose not to. THAT is, in my opinion, the true evil.

Reason Being : The Bible Today: Why it Needs to be Taken Literally and Why it is Irrelevant

Great post, this is my first time here and I've been perusing the archives. I must say, very nicely done. There are those who would argue that the bible has lots of "good parts", and they would be right, but there aren't any of these things that can't be found in the writings of secular philosophers. They did it without having to rely on fairy tales.

I'm probably going to catch hell for this, but I think you guys could have been nicer to "Guest". He was simply stating what he believed and what he thought were inconsistencies in the OP. As an atheist, I understand why you took a take no prisoners attitude. The fundies want to create a theocracy, and they want us dead. This guy, however is obviously not one of them and could have been treated with a little more love, just sayin'.

I think I should qualify my last comment a bit. Religion, on its own is neither good or bad. It's simply a tool. How one uses it is where the harm comes from. There are good things that people do because they are people of faith. The reaction of the Amish to the Nickel Mines shootings comes to mind.

Simo Hayha is an absolute badass. Great list. Religion is just a bad idea. It instills in people an "Us versus Them" mentality that eventually leads to violence. Although most of the religiously motivated violence is actually using religion to cover the real motives(greed, lust for power, etc.), if religion didn't exist there would be fewer graves. Personally, I find religion to be hypocritical. The religious always say (when explaining the existence of evil) that it is due to Man having Freewill. Then they turn around and try to legislate their idea of morality(abortion, gay marriage, etc.) on the rest of us, in an attempt to strip us of our own Freewill.

Listverse : 15 Ways We Handle The Dead

Dig a hole in the ground, put me in it, and plant a tree on top of me. The tree will use my corpse as fertlizer and grow for centuries. No headstone, just a beautiful tree to mark my final resting place. Or just put me in a trash bag and leave me on the curb. I'll be dead, and won't give a damn by then.

Since when is the right to not be offended been law? No matter what country you are living in, if you live there speak the language. If you live there, respect their customs, don't ask them to respect yours. If that makes you unhappy go back where you came from. Being an immigrant means giving up certain things and integrating into the culture of the place you now live. If you are unable or unwilling to do that, stay home. If you're a muslim living in the west, we eat pork here, deal with it. No one is forcing you to eat pork, but don't be offended by those who do. Racism is bad, but it is a part of history. The past can't be changed. Deal with it. Women that can do the same job as a man should be paid the same, true. But all jobs are not equal. Deal with it. You live in a country who's liberal lifestyle offends your religious sensibilities? Tough shit. Go back home or...Deal with it. Can't deal with it? Go fuck yourself.

I have read my bible, and there are no dates mentioned. There is a passage that tells me that I can stone my son to death if he mouths off to me. You young earth creationists are so BORING. It's the same thing over and over. A god that finds it necessary to test my faith by deceiving me is not deserving of worship, as a matter of fact, He's kind of a dick. If your wife got someone to try to seduce you as a test of your fidelity, you would be pissed off, but God gets a pass. Gimme a break. I would rather put my faith in people who did their homework and discovered real things, than in the mythology of a bronze age desert people.
