"In this sense the hobby is arguably pretty old-fashioned, a reflection of what might now be a passing status quo, supporting as it does creativity, a dexterous engagement with the physical world, and face-to-face social contact, as well as a willingness to make the best, smooth out rough edges and move forward."

That's what makes it worth doing if you ask me.

As far as the matter of releasing new books goes: in my opinion a well-designed RPG is functionally complete on release and everything after the core book is basically there to pay the developers' mortgages (with all the implications regarding unnecessary cruft and barrel-scraping for ideas that that implies). That's said neither to condone nor to condemn; it is what it is, it's what happens when people want a career as RPG developers rather than making their RPG a thing they make a bit of money off this year before they faff off to do something else. It's easy for me to rest on my precariat laurels and say "accept it, you're not going to make money off this project forever" - I'm resigned to the idea of my career being a portfolio rather than a steady job, or possibly I've adjusted my expectations downward. I 'unno.

I'll level with you, Jimmy boy - I'm tough on Renedra bases and tough on the causes of Renedra bases. I have yet found a way to get them off the sprue without chafing their soft, delicate plasticy shapes, or of filing them down without flattening them. That plastic be soft, bro. I went to the point of acquiring MDF ones because the Renedras were so... inadequate.

As a matter of interest, if I were to come over all Dark Ages I'd probably go Welsh. This has everything to do with my Celtic ancestry and allegiance to the land of Hark's fathers, and nothing at all to do with poutiness or braided leather. I'm sure that's VERY historically dubious, anyway.

(If that's from the King Arthur thing... was that any good?)

OK, that's fair. Stuff in bowls should only smell if it's food or on fire.

Shiny boots and the belts, I think.

That's because you're a true gentleman who would never bruise the meta's innocence in such a vulgar way.

An old Romany word meaning "mate", "bro", "dude" etcetera, with a slight hint of "you silly sod" on the side.

You seem to be confusing "man" with "slob". :p I admit, the table's the wrong shape (although it's fine for RPGs), and you could make a case for a flatscreen telly behind one of those wooden screen things, but I would happily cave in it. Plus it looks like it's underground.

(We both know I'm just messing. I understand the appeal of the scruffy dander-nest as much as the next man. You could get me a nice classy room like that and it'd be littered with coffee mugs, biscuit crumbs and charcoal dust within the week.)

Speak for yourself, mush. If that cave had comfier chairs it'd be RPG paradise. :p

And frankly, secret sconce switches are cool. I believe the aesthetic is improved by not having luridly colourful gamebooks intruding upon it. Your mileage, of course. ;)

I don't disagree, but I come in with the phenomena. Modern political structures are the result of the process; we investigate the process in order to learn how the structures can be altered for more efficient and, potentially, more just governance. And yes, I know - grind the universe to powder and you will find not an atom, not an iota, not a quark or a cosmic flicker of objectively-existing 'justice'. You also won't find the value of money, or why Wordsworth liked daffodils. (Although if you can work that one out, let me know, because I don't see the appeal myself.)
