this was really moving. I can totally relate to the "special day" thing. Birthday, mother's day... I get feeling a little selfish myself. I think it's gotten better over the years, especially now that the teens can actually *do* something on their own initiative to make the day special, but I've really tried to stop feeling so special. Your friend's story is heartbreaking, really. there are so many people who have to be separated from their kids for financial reasons and it's amazing that you reach out to her. I imagine that she's pretty lonely.
