I'm no specialist either but I'd really like to see a drawing of the images on the stele *and* those on the obelisk. I'm not even sure that the headless human is anything of the sort: turn him around 90 deg. and he resembles the odd animals above. I'll wait for the full publication, I guess.

It's a very nice tin anyway, if not quite worth Euro 99. I think the seller should cancel the 12 Euro shipping charge though: it should be able to deliver itself.

Sorry Heresiarch but it does reek of milking women. Imagine, on the other hand, if it were about milking men of their white stuff.... No, I'm not going to go there. Too much yucky factor.

Heresy Corner : How Implementing Leveson threatens religious freedom

Since the devil quotes scripture, I'll cite Exodus 21:20-21 NAB: 'When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property.' I don't think you've thought this through, Philip.

Past Horizons : Help save the cultural heritage of Afghanistan

A former student of Llewelyn Morgan (who wrote the excellent *Buddhas of Bamiyan*) is advising firms prospecting around Kabul. He told Llewelyn that something he wrote a while back -- to the effect that if you scratch the ground in Afghanistan you either find archaeological or mineral treasures -- is in his experience the literal truth, since wherever his people looked they found Buddhist material. This is certainly going to be an ongoing problem.

Heresy Corner : How Assange might escape

Dear Woolly-Minded, Not "scare quotes" (as in shock, horror, fright) but quotation marks (as in I am quoting his own phrase). I do think Mr Green's opinion was rather quickly taken up by some even though it's not the only possible interpretation of law; far from it. Citing him again does not an irrefutable argument make....

Apologies for an early morning conflation of artist and activist. I understand that Assange is wanted for *questioning* by the Swedish police in regard to two claims of rape. He hasn't been charged yet with anything, let alone convicted. Hence his offer (again) to be questioned in the UK, this time inside the embassy. If he's thereafter actually charged with rape -- or refusing to use a condom when so requested -- I imagine that would be a game changer.

Neither an Assange groupie nor entirely rabid, but it was a bit tongue-in-cheek. Still, the Tories are being nasty here: or do you think diplomatic immunity and sanctuary as outdated as (say) trial by jury? I imagine the Chinese felt just as frustrated when that blind artist climbed into the American embassy and they couldn't get their hands on him. But we liked him, didn't we.

Could we be a bit more serious in that the 'threat' to invade an embassy, however tiny an apartment, is not a precedent the Brits should set. And you know, now that the threat's been made, there is a precedent that other regimes, even nastier than the Tories, will be tempted to follow. Incredibly stupid (imho).

Heresy Corner : The French take genital mutilation seriously. But then they also ban burqas

Having only seen but never had this organ, perhaps I can better liken male mutilation to docking a puppy's tail -- as opposed to amputating most of the tail of a growing female dog (or bitch, if you prefer). Admittedly I'm not a quadruped either so perhaps am unqualified to judge.

If little boys had as much removed as little girls have in FGM, I dare say the practice would be banned and enforced from tomorrow on. Which reminds me of the poster in New York many years ago:"If men got pregnant, abortion would be legal, moral, and federally funded." Now, imagine that they cut off a good part of your willy....

They also had a large lake that seems to have watered the oasis. You can see the basin clearly from the road as you approach the city. Also, there are still channels of water 'in the desert' some distance from town. Now the water is salty, but then? This is hardly a discovery. Now the water is salty, but then?
When I lived for some time in Syria in the 90s, every single fax in and out of the country went through Damascus security police HQ as did every international letter. So it's really an old idea. Nice that we're catching up with the Syria of papa Assad. I suppose we'll get used to it.

EconoMonitor : Today Germany Is the Big Loser, Not Greece

You wrote, "In the period before the euro, they would devalue the Deutschmark so that they could increase the sales of their products to their neighbors." Chapter and verse, please. As I recall, from a currency linked to the DM (the guilder), they only went up, taking the florin with them. Also, don't forget that France and Britain, too, were chronic devaluators. In that sense you're right: the Euro has been a win-win for Germany; for NL perhaps not so much.

I'm in All In A Don's Day too! with an incredibly pretentious comment on her post 'From el-Bulli to Apicius'. Page 199.
