Ideas and Thoughts from Winter Street VC and Entrepreneur : Is anyone actually checking in?

That's exactly what I'm suggesting. If "Location-Based Services" were anything more than a game, the value would be there for anyone with a smartphone. But right now, FourSquare, GoWalla, SCVNGR... they're all games, and a game can never provide the value necessary to get a ton of traction outside of the tech community and its "suburbs."

Great thoughts, Healy. I asked Den Crowley once, "What is the value of a check-in?" and he didn't really have a satisfactory answer. As people recognize less and less value - immediate, tangible value, not long-term pie-in-the-sky value like "mayorship discounts" - they will migrate from the FourSquares and GoWallas of the world to either SCVNGR - which purports to give immediate rewards for tasks completed - or to no check-ins at all.

Great question, Tyler. We don't compete directly with OT - we actually see ourselves as a similar product but serving a different market. I'd be more than happy to answer anyone's questions about Textaurant, our "lack of a proper business model" (*ahem* Vishi), and the future. Please feel free to email me at tc@textaurant.com. Thanks! - Josh Bob Founder and President Textaurant

Ideas and Thoughts from Winter Street VC and Entrepreneur : As cell networks get clogged are we moving backwards?

Verizon already is a real option, but in a year (when my AT&T contract expires), they may be THE option.

Good question, Healy. I think the idea is that carriers will be building out their networks toward 4G in order to accommodate the increase in traffic. What that means in reality, though, is a whole other story... I'll say this - if AT&T doesn't improve in 12 months, I'll be going back to Verizon.
