How does this work, technically? Is there different firmware sent to the phones? Can someone who's accomplished it share?

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Microsoft Office for iPad is all about enterprise

Apple needs Office if it wants to sell to government & institutions. Office is not just the product, its the file types that a lot of custom software in business & gov't deals well with. And imagine not having to train workers on a new office program. they can just tell workers "Its the same one you use now."

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Apple tells MFI's to get busy building next-gen iOS accessories with Airplay over Bluetooth 4.0

I think car audio integration is another big market. Listening to music through your iPhone headphones, then get in the car, and the music keeps going. Using controls in your car to control the phone's music player, automagically switching when you get a call/Siri, etc.
