tylerstanton.com : Arbitrary Thoughts

My 4-year-old had her first nose bleed a couple of weeks ago in the car on a long trip. We were just riding along, when my wife noticed blood dripping down out of my daughter's nose. Now, my daughter is deathly scared of blood - she thinks she's dying when she gets a small scratch. So my wife acted quickly, hoping to keep her from seeing the blood. Only, whenever we put a Kleenex up to my daughter's nose, she's been trained to blow (like if her nose is snotty). So, she blew. Blood. Went. Everywhere. It took hours to clean it up, and there's still stains everywhere. Good luck ever selling that car in the future...they'll think a murder occurred there.

tylerstanton.com : My Athletic Lowlights

Senior year, on the basketball team. Due to an injury of our center, I'm forced to play in a game that decides whether we go to the playoffs. We're down by 3 points before the half, and somehow I get the ball at mid-court with no one near me. 3 seconds left. I dribble down the court. Everyone is screaming "SHOOT IT!", but instead I dribble in for a layup. It takes longer than 3 seconds for me to get to the basket. The timer goes off. I never shoot the ball. Needless to say, I didn't play in the second half (our injured center played better than me...). We won the game, but no thanks to my lack of awareness. I feel for you, man! I've been right there. Dude, I need a hug... Is it alright if I call you dude?

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : The rarest church musician of all time.

My grandmother bought an electric organ from a garage sale, and I helped her bring it home. No one knew how to play it - she had to ask me how to turn it on (which I had to play with all the knobs and switches to figure that out). When I turned it on, I didn't realize the volume was all the way up, and I played a note (which amazingly was a trombone-like-sound!!) and blew out the speakers. True story. Worst $100 my grandmother ever spent. Or I should say, worst $100 she ever spent, only to have me screw it up... Pity...

tylerstanton.com : 3 Questions

1) Psych 2a) Dallas 2b) Software Developer 3) I'm 50/50...I work on a Mac at work, but still have to have a side of Windows, in order to work with the rest of the world. If I won a contest and was given a Mac, I'd be overjoyed. If I had to go by a new laptop, I couldn't afford a Macbook, so I'd be a PC for sure.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Win a copy of Lecrae's new ablum, "Rehab."

I bought Rehab last Friday...cuz I like to keep it krunk...for Christ... So anyway, that's the last album I bought. If I won another album, I would use it to spread world peace and would definitely not use it as a coaster, even though my wife hates condensation rings on our tables. And I'd wear a hoodie or t-shirt to work and instantly convert all my co-workers to Jesus-anity. So I think I should win. Word to your mother.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Passing the prayer at dinner.

My grandfather, who raised me, always just had the opinion that it was the man's responsibility to say the prayer at dinner, and he almost always did. Now that I'm the man of the house, I'm not quite this responsible. I usually pull #5 and have my daughter pray. She always ends with Amen, brother Ben, shot a goose, and killed a hen. So it makes for dinner AND entertainment.

tylerstanton.com : Pet Peeves XVI

People who decide to enter the interstate on-ramp going as slow as possible, then coming to a complete stop because cars are coming... Isn't that the purpose of an on-ramp? To speed up so that you can merge with that traffic? I've seen a few on-ramps that were roughly the length of my desk at work, and those I might understand, but when they give you 1.43 miles to match the speed of traffic, then merge with it, I think it's best if you don't decide to come to a complete stop when I'm behind you. And the 18-wheeler behind me agrees... :)

You've probably seen this already, but I just saw this totally awesome video on this new site called YouTube - It's called the dancing baby!!! You can see it here. I'm like 99% certain that this video has a real dancing baby in it. It's so real... What? This video came out in the late 90s? Then how did I miss it? I'm usually so "up to date" with these kinds of things...

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Forgetting 1 geography lesson.

I know someone has probably already mentioned this, but this really makes me think about the song Slow Fade by Casting Crowns. They have a teaching video (see below), where lead singer Mark Hall talks about Psalm 1:1: "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers." This person who does these things follows a progression - walking, then standing, then sitting. Each time, they are getting deeper and deeper entrenched in sin. We don't just sit down and start sinning - we walk in it for a while, then we stand nearby, then we sit down with it. Before we know it, we're rolling around in it like a pig in mud. [youtube N9JgrJjyNzg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9JgrJjyNzg youtube]

I love giraffes! At the Dallas Zoo, they have a sign giving you permission to...ahem...defecate in their restrooms, and I was going to take a picture of it, but then I saw giraffes and totally forgot. I stole a picture of the sign though...see it here. Funny story: When I was dating my wife, I once asked her "Do you think God has a sense of humor?" And she replied "Well, he made giraffes, didn't he?" Say that out loud, and it sounds like she was saying "He made YOUR @#$, didn't he?" She had put the emPHASis on the wrong sylLABle. We almost dropped the engagement right then and there...

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Seinfeld vs. U-Haul & what's your craziest moving story?

A moving company broke our dining room table one time, then said they didn't do it. It was fine when it came out of storage (I saw it!) and it was broke when it went in to the house. Anyway, the manager (who was in his late 60s) said they wouldn't do anything about it, and my grandfather (in his 70s and on oxygen because he smoked for years) layed hands on him and said he should change his mind. He did. True story...

I know some other people have commented by saying almost this exact same thing (and it's going to make me look like a copy-cat...), but I feel this way about blogging (and perhaps writing in general). It just seems so easy to write, and the words just flow for me, especially when I am writing something that I know is coming straight from God. I don't necessarily think that my blog is changing the world or anything (like this one is...), but at the very least it is a learning experience for me, it's therapeutic, and maybe even practice for something bigger. Blogging and writing has become my disc-golf-course-hole-digging-experience.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Trying to find a new church.

My family and I were looking for a new church (because of a move) this last spring, and we ended up choosing one that we really liked. But, this kind, older lady whose job it was to introduce herself and help visitors in the sanctuary before the service, kept introducing herself to us every Sunday, and before long it was just hilarious. We even ended up joining the church (my wife was teaching a language class there, and they preferred that we be "members" if she was going to teach...), and Doreen kept introducing herself every Sunday after that. It gets to where when we see her, we say "Hi, Doreen!" and she turns around and introduces herself and asks if we need any help finding more information about the church - like it's our first visit. Sometimes I wonder if it's not really her job to do what she does - maybe she has dementia and just does it because she doesn't know any better. I kind of hope this is the case, because otherwise she is terrible at what she does. Either way, I'm not going to say a word, because I'm afraid they may give me her job, and I probably wouldn't be any better at it.
