I find the author's justification for Joseph Smith's polygamy odd. I think few Mormons would say that was why it was instituted (there is no official reason or justification, it just was), though that was one side effect later on and some people have said that. Joseph and polygamy is a difficult thing to get super-clear on, because there was a lot of secrecy. So many books and arguments over just what happened. I'm curious as to who Matthew Bowman is but I suppose I could look that up my own self.

This librarian is hiding in the SF area and looking sadly at the book about bipartisan solutions to environmental problems that she was about to review. That book is very sad right now.

I actually made the dumpster fire 2016 ornament. And then I put a radioactivity symbol on it, so it's a nuclear garbage fire now. I don't expect better out of 2017.

OK, it IS awesome to fly around Moscow, but I think she's going to end up in trouble! I mean if the devil is Stalin or Soviet chaos or something, what happens to her? I don't know, this is weird.

Hilarious story about the poets in 1920: one of them had a new coat! And some local young toughs were going to relieve him of his coat, until they realized who he was. Mariengof, the great poet! He got to keep his coat. I cannot think of anything that shows you how important poetry and writing was to Russians more than that. Can you imagine some young American toughs robbing a guy and then letting him go because he's a modern poet???
